Group Communication Reflection Paper

Over the last several years I have had the opportunity to work collaboratively on several group projects. Throughout this I have discovered that open conversation within a group is the most effective way to accomplish a set goal. When the communication dissolves, so does the outcome of the overall project. The majority of group projects that I have partook in are in person groups. However, I have also been part of several online groups. The most difficult challenge within those stems from two separate issues. The first is that there is no personal or professional connection between the group members. Often times we have never met and are thrown together to find a solution to a project. As compared to in person groups this creates a lack of cohesiveness and it feels as if we are individuals combining our own ideas verses combining our ideas in a group effort. The second issue is technology. Internet and computer issues have derailed many meetings and prevented members from participating. This leaves some within the group feeling as though they missed information or were not a productive team member. When the groups that I have participated work together as a …show more content…
When this occurs the best option is to formulate a plan to reestablish communication within the group. Balance can be restored through a variety of methods. One of these methods relies on members within the group that take on particular roles. Typically, in a group there are several roles that people take on. One of the most important roles in assisting with group communication break downs is the gatekeeper. The gatekeeper encourages equal communication between group members, minimizing some and encouraging others to speak. Other things that help when a break down occurs is third party mediation. A third party mediator can quickly get to the heart of the problem, create clear rules and boundaries for conversation, and work on the needs of the

The main challenge of this group situation is that there was a sudden rise of conflict among members at the beginning to mid phase of the project. This resulted the possible development of groupthink (Janis, 2008). As a leader in this situation, I would firstly feel lousy and disappointed in myself that I didn’t take note of group’s division and how the meeting could be more inclusive of everyone’s opinion (Chadha, 2016). However, at that point, I would also probably feel confused but yet curious as to why it was suddenly voiced out, hence thought that I should facilitate to explicit the thoughts and feelings of each member to better understand as well.…

Hi Professor, For the Group-Led Discussion I did the introduction. I emailed the whole group on March 5 before spring break so we could get started on the assignment because spring break was coming up. Right away I got an email from Giselle she helped to explain what needed to be done for the assignment. The following day I got an email back from Paige saying she would like to answer question 3.…

First, what worked well was how our group integrated our individual skills together to complete the project. When we introduced ourselves and what our concentrations were, it was easy to determine what roles and responsibilities we would take on. We worked individually on our tasks before meeting together and integrating everything into the final product. The problems that arose primarily concerned communication and scheduling group meetings.…

In high school, we were constantly being told that we could not work in groups because we would get too loud. In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Comparing when the students were working on group work to their individual work, the results were polar opposites. The tasks for students was to write down what they knew about 5 sided figures.…

Collaboration is the process of working together with others to improve a piece of writing. It is a process in which others revise one’s original work and give the author advise on how to edit their piece of writing. Different perspectives are shared and taken into consideration, thus allowing the author to get a fresh pair of eyes on their writing other than their own. It is a very important step when completing a paper because it helps us be able to see the improvements needed to be made that we might not have noticed. Project 1:…

Socially group work is often praised. With phrases like “two heads are better than one”, team work seems like the most logical choice for a project. This has not been my experience at Florida State University. When faced with the prospect of another involuntary group project I imagined many possibilities and outcomes. None of which reflect my actual experience with the research I conducted, the way the information was formatted, or my experience with Group 3.…

As a collaborator, my strengths were that I made sure that everything got done on time and that it was done right. My weaknesses were that I didn’t really talk to my group as much as I should have and I kind of didn’t put responsibility on anyone but myself. Group work requires talking to others, otherwise you’ll just pull all of the weight and the other group members will get a free ride. Honestly, I feel comfortable controlling the whole process of group work and have people just follow what I say so I know that things are getting done right. This is probably not good, but I don’t feel like I can trust groups because a lot of the time people don’t do what they’re supposed to.…

On November 9th, Erin and I co-facilitated a group discussion around trauma-informed practice as part of our Group Facilitation assignment as second-year nursing students. The process consisted of choosing a peer-reviewed article related to trauma-informed practice, then creating a Facilitation Plan around the article and relevant course theory, and finally facilitating a group discussion. As the next step towards the development of our group facilitation skills, we were assigned to write a critical reflection about the experience of facilitating a group discussion. Through this paper I provided a summary of our group facilitation experience, explored group dynamics, what I perceived as our strengths and challenges, what I have learned from…

In reality it can be stated that communication is most significant part of a leader ability to function. Furthermore, having an open communication is key role in developing effective group. To accomplish multiple tasks leaders uses several different forms of communications, email Phone calls, or any documents that convers information to the group. Group Decision Making Sound decision making is an integral part of the overall success of any organization. While the leader of the organization has the final say in the overall decision making process, group decision making can generate a more complete solution to a problem by aggregating the resources of several individuals. This offers increased diversity of ideas and opens the door for more potential solutions to a problem to be considered, thereby leading to a greater sense of acceptance of the chosen solution by members of the organization (Robbins & Judge, 2009). While group decision making can lead to more favorable outcomes, it is not a perfect process.…

In fact, my group members were very helpful and whenever one of us had trouble with something we would all participate in solving her problem or giving her helpful tips to solve it. By helping, supporting and motivating each other it made the project easier to solve and it helped us in achieving our work in the most effective time and ways. Here are some points I loved about the experience, firstly being a part of a group helped in developing my skills and we were able to achieve more work than in working individually. Secondly, we had more time to manage and plan. Thirdly I developed more communicating skills and team commitment and also I had more exchange of information between myself and our group members.…
