What Is It?
Open aortic surgery (OAS) is also referred as Open aortic repair (OAR). The technique is performed by a team of specialists. A surgical incision is made in the abdominal or retroperitoneal area to observe, control, and repair the patient’s aorta.
What Is Open Aortic Surgery Performed?
The surgery is used for treating thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysm, acute aortic syndrome, aortic ruptures, and aortic dissection.
In Open Aortic Surgery for the abdominal aortic aneurysm, the aorta’s aneurysmal portion is replaced with the graft made of PTFE or Dacron (usually).
How Is OAS Different From Aortic Valve Replacement or Aortic Valve Repair?
Open aortic surgery defines the surgery of aorta, while Aortic Valve Repair and Aortic Valve Replacement are the surgery of the heart valves.

OAS is carried to repair the abdominal aortic aneurysm in a patient. It is considered as an open surgery since it requires a doctor to open the abdomen and operate on the aorta. In this method, a graft is used to replace the bulging and weak section of the aorta. Your doctor will make a large incision either at the side of your abdomen or in the belly. Subsequently, the clamps are placed on the aorta to stop the flow of blood across the operated area. Next, aneurysm is removed and a graft is attached to the aorta.
Once the aorta is repaired, clamps are removed to allow blood flow via the aorta again. This is followed by the stitching of incision by the
