Ooblek Activity

Goal:
Use the RACE method in writing the conclusion of a scientific lab report by examining the amazing properties of a substance called Ooblek. The RACE method consists of restating the problem, prompt or assignment, answering the problem, prompt, or argument by making a claim, citing the evidence from the text or lab that supports or disputes your answer, (using qualitative or quantitative observations) and explaining and elaborating your answer using the evidence cited and describing what your evidence revealed/relating it to the real world.

Problem:
Three liquids (water, glue, borax) are mixed together in a dixie cup. Will the resulting substance be a solid, liquid, or gas? In addition, upon creating the substance did a chemical or physical change occur?

Solids are anything with definite volume/definite shape. Liquids are substances with definite volume and indefinite shape. Gases are substances with indefinite volume and indefinite shape. Physical properties are things that can be measured or observed without changing the identity of a substance. Physical changes are changes of matter without changing the identity of the substance. Chemical properties are characteristics of substances seen during chemical changes. Chemical changes are when one or more substances are changed into another substance.

Materials:
Water
Glue
Borax

Equipment:
Cup

Procedure: Mix all of the substances together in a cup. Make sure that you stir them evenly. Record 10 pieces of qualitative data and 2 quantitative data

Qualitative Data:
The substance is squishy.
The substance is yellow.
The substance has a definite volume.
The substance has no definite shape.
The substance sticks to paper.
The substance is not flammable.
The blob looks like dough.
It does not stick to the table.

Quantitative Data:
The substance 34.7 grams.
The substances was 43.1 grams (in total)

Background: Isopods, or what are often called pill bugs, are crustaceans. Isopods live in damp environments. They can be found under rocks, logs and in soil. In this lab, 10 isopods were given a choice between salt water or regular water chambers to test their preference. The results were recorded every 30 seconds over a period of 10 minutes.…

“Classifying Chemical Reactions - Lab Report” I - Introduction - Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, properties and change of matter. In chemistry, chemical and physical changes are used to help scientists understand how different substances react given various circumstances. A chemical change is any change resulting in the formation of a new chemical substance(s). A physical property is any change that does not involve the chemical makeup of a substance at all. In total there are five (5) chemical reactions.…

The use of animal carcasses in make up Makeup is now trending more than ever, “currently there are a lot of different make up brands and products that ranges from high end to drug store”. (Oddee.net) Most make up comes with a list of ingredients on the wrapper or container, but do we really know what is in our make up? This document seeks to highlight the fact that major ingredients in some of the makeup products we use are indeed animal carcasses. This document serves to further highlight and explore some of the products that contains animal carcasses and from what animals they came from. Bronzer, blush, eyeliner, conciliar are what they call makeup, they are made with a diverse array of ingredients including oils, dyes, and other forms of pigmentation that doesn’t get mention as such as animal carcasses.…

A physical property is a characteristic of a substance that, when changed, does not change the identity of the substance in question. The chemical makeup of the atom, molecule, particle, mixture, or compound does not change. Thus, the substance remains fairly unchanged. Color, state, smell, melting point, and boiling point are all examples of physical properties (teacherlingo.com 1). Density is a physical property.…

Purpose: The overall goal of this lab was to perform a procedure on E. Coli which involved transferring genes that encoded for the green fluorescent protein into E. Coli to see if the transferred genes would make a difference on the growth and whether or not the bacteria would glow under UV light. Hypothesis: If the bacteria with the pGLO plasmid was grown on a plate containing LB and ampicillin then the bacteria will grow but not glow under UV light. If the bacteria with the pGLO plasmid was grown on a plate containing LB, ampicillin, and arabinose then it will be able to grow and glow under UV light. If the bacteria without pGLO plasmid was grown on a plate containing LB and ampicillin then it will not be able to grow or glow under UV light.…

Gases, solids, and liquids are the three states that a substance can exist as. A gas does not maintain shape and volume. Gases expand to fit and fill the container. While a liquid maintains volume, but not shape and fits the shape of the container it is placed in. Solids can maintain both volume and shape.…

If a compound is an electrolyte it conducts electricity by breaking down into ions when dissolved into a solution. A non-electrolyte compound does not dissociate in solution. A non-electrolyte compound cannot conduct electricity because it dissolves in solution as molecules instead of ions. Colligative properties are properties of a solution that depend on the amount of solute dissolved, and not dependent on the identity of the solute. The colligative properties studied in this current chapter of chemistry are: vapor pressure lowering, boiling point elevation, freezing point depression, and osmotic pressure.…

The Effects the Decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide An investigation into how the amount of oxygen is produced by changing one variable effects the decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide in the presence of the enzyme. This shows us that when the H2O2 has reacted with the catalyst this is what it produces. There are many ways in which the amount of oxygen produced could be affected. I believe that, surface area of the chip, temperature of liquid that is reacting, the concentration of the liquid or the amount used are going to be the major variables in the experiment.…

Physical properties are used to observe and describe the matter that they are testing for. Properties; • Density – Density is a figure that tells us how many kilograms of a uniform substance is contained in a volume of 1m³. Density is also defined as the ratio of mass to the volume and is given the symbol ρ (Greek symbol). • Melting point – Pure elements usually have a clear temperature at which they will start melting and slowly starts to become a liquidised version of that element. However, there are some materials that may not have a melting point because once they are heated up they may burn or even evaporate.…

Intermolecular Forces Intermolecular forces are the result of attractive or repulsive forces between atoms, molecules or ions, primarily as a result of electrostatic attractions; these forces act between discrete molecules. Intermolecular forces are weak forces but without them life as we know it would not be possible: water vapor would not condense into its liquid (or solid forms) if its molecules did not attract each other, and all matter, in fact, would exist as gases. The physical states of matter are commonly defined by their physical characteristics: a solid has a definite volume and shape, a liquid has a definite volume but not a definite shape and a gas has neither a definite volume nor a definite shape.…
