The name of our disorder is onycholysis. Onycholysis is the painless removal of the nail from the nail bed, and is a common disorder. It can be a sign of skin disease or infection. This injury mainly happens to women who have long nails. The nail acts as a lever taking the nail away from the skin. Infection with bacteria and yeast start to form in the space under the nail, which causes the loose part of the nail to turn a white, yellow, or green.
There is a wide range of possible causes of onycholysis. The disease can be caused by fungal infections, psoriasis, which is a skin condition that causes cells to grow too quickly, repetitive tapping, or prolonged immersion of the nails in water. Separation occurs gradually and is painless. The nail starts lifting from the tip of the nail and makes its way back. It’s very important to seek medical attention when you start experiencing nail lifting because it creates space under the nail and accumulates dirt that slows down the nail healing process and increase fungus infection. You can prevent onycholysis from occurring by keeping your nails short, maintaining personal hygiene, avoiding excessive or aggressive pedicure or exposure and contact with chemical irritants such as nail polish remover, and observing nail condition regularly. Don’t leave your hands in water for too long for it makes nails weak and also dries your nails after washing your hands, leaving water to sit on your nails can cause fungal infection as well. Onycholysis is caused by trauma. For instance, something as simple as tapping long finger nails on a keyboard or on a counter daily can cause enough damage. However it can be treated by prescribed medicines which may also have some side effects, and can be very expensive. A physician may help by trimming the nail close to the place where it separates from the nail bed if it’s not too severe. Under medical advice, use anti-fungal medication with diagnosis of fungal infection. It can also be treated in the salon if it’s not swollen red or has visible
