Over the coarse of this semester there has been many situations where I able to guide student. Due to my unfortunate inability to do math, I mainly helped student with english and history. This was especially helpful during the beginning of the semester. This was when the tutors main focus was preparing the grade 10 student for the Ontario Secondary School Literary Test (or OSSLT). There was one account in particular that I felt that I helped a student quit well. When I first started working with Ed, he cared little about the OSSLT test, and whether or not he succeeded at it. At first, it was painful to work through the packages with him. Then, after learning that he learned best by me ‘pen in hand’ showing him what he was doing wrong was more effective than verbally telling him, it was so much more easy to tutor him. I had taught him things like how to format a news report properly, how to write in …show more content…
Another situation where I felt that I succeed as a tutor, was during June. A student that I regularly tutored named Cody, was studying for his drama exam. This student expressed to me that he was not extremely interested in drama and only took it to get his art credit. From talking with him I got the impression that he would be challenging to work with, and would have a difficult time memorizing his lines. Although, I found through isolating him to keep him on track and using a certain approached to helping him learn his lines he was very successful; even nailing all the pauses and accent. I had studied with him by saying a short three to four words of his line, and having him repeat me. I did this throughout the line, often jumping around or starting from the beginning, until he could recite the whole thing. Overall, I feel as though I have helped each of my students to a certain degree Whether I could barely remember math or, like these two encounters, I helped them a

Summary I gain a lot of insight and learning from going through the process of identifying a student, getting to know them, administering a variety of assessments, writing about and interpreting the test results, researching interventions and supports, and making recommendations based on all of the information collected. My two main takeaways are that I had some difficulties with Woodcock Johnson IV assessment and that I significantly changed my mind about the pedagogy of math. I struggled with administering and interpreting the Woodcock Johnson IV. While I was administering the test it was difficult to just follow the script and not prompt the student to think about the question longer or review their work before they had a final answer.…

I obtained insight from physicians about their experiences and specialties. I also had the opportunity to listen to patients’ stories and concerns. I learned that medicine is not merely about applying medical knowledge to treat others, but also about the quality of interaction that physicians forge with their patients. Furthermore, this experience helped me explore the daily lives of physicians and the challenges they face.…

Final Exam Essay Prompt: Write about what, specifically, you are going to do with your new found knowledge. They say knowledge comes from experiences, and the experiences this past year have shed a different light on my world. Our actions are direct effects of the world surrounding us, causing every choice I now make to direct, and redirected by many of the recent things we have learned. From grammar rules to discussion points, and the words of our various authors, I have gained new perspective because each lesson has taught me something new, and often it was about myself even more so than the assignment.…

Last Spring, I had a student who was in the final semester of his senior year and was oppositional and rude in class. I would politely accept these corrections, but was annoyed by his negative attitude. When he refused to participated with classmates during an experiment, I asked him to stay after and speak with me.…

With two months of exploring and practicing the Core Intervention Model at Ellwood Elementary School in the city of Goleta, CA, I (Xiaowei Qi, University of California Santa Barbara) participated in three sessions, tutoring kids in kindergarten and students in the second and fifth grade. My supervisors were Amanda Sweigart (the fifth grade), Samantha Farver (the second grade), and Judith Quintero (kindergarten). Regarding the journals about my experience as a tutor, among the three sessions, fifth graders learn independently, quietly, and quickly. Almost all the students in this class worked hard with great participation and fully focused their attentions on the tasks.…

Should I go back to my ruined city, and help to rebuild it, or should I stay somewhere safe and try to move on? This painful dilemma was the question I faced in December 2005, when schools began to reopen after Hurricane Katrina. I made the choice to go back, and to teach some of the first high school students making their difficult way back to the city from wherever they had fled. It was an exhausting and stressful experience, but one that taught me so much—about resilience, innovation, and what even teenagers will put up with for the love of their home city. I arrived at O. Perry Walker High School on January 6, 2006—a Friday.…

I knew from a young age that teaching was what I was meant to do. Shadowing a teacher for a day in eight grade cemented for me that I was going to be a teacher. While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…
