In the Ontario School Curriculum, Grade 2 Social Studies is designed to help students develop their understanding of their local community and begin to examine the global community.
Students are given the opportunity to explore a variety of tradition with their own families as well as their local and global communities. The social studies program enables students to develop “an understanding of how these traditions contribute to and enrich their own community and Canadian society.” Students will study communities around the world and develop awareness of the diversity that exists in the global community.

The Grade 2 social studies expectations provide opportunities for students to explore a number of concepts connected to the citizenship education framework (see page 10), including community, identity, relationships, respect, and stewardship 73

Using story telling within this lesson will allow students to learn about their peers cultures and backgrounds in interactive manner. Students will be given the opportunity to share their own stories, but also be attentive to the stories of their peers. In doing so, the story telling teaching strategy will allow the class to formulate a sense of community and belonging to one another.
