I know I can relate because I have fake texted while being under an uncomfortable or embarrassing circumstance. In Andrew Reiner’s article Only Disconnect he said “one student of mine admitted in a journal entry that she often "fake texts" while waiting for class to start or standing in line. She doesn 't want to look "like a loser in public." I can personally relate to this student as well as many others could too. As a new college student, I do not know many people on campus which forces me to be on my phone all the time during my walk to class rather than giving others around me the perception that I could be a loser. I think that pretending to be talking to someone by fake texting can give someone the interpretation that I do have friends, and that I am not a loser for being alone and not having anyone to talk to. I do not like when I am walking alone because it intimidates me in an indescribable way. This leads to me hiding behind my cellular device so I do not have to deal with anyone or anything. Therefore, I agree with Reiner that we do not enjoy life and live the moment because we hide behind our technology devices.
