Upon completing the reading of both articles, the 1st written by Alan R. Roper (2007) and the 2nd by Stefanie B. Waschull (2005) I have concluded that they both have provided a well written hypothesis based on their experiments. Although Waschull (2005) research was based more on self-discipline and motivation and Roper (2007) focused on methodology. However, I would like to point out what I know are most important to me. Starting with Develop a time-management strategy Roper (2007) this to me is the most important of all seven factors. Without taking the time to sit and put together an actual plan/strategy on how you will get through said course simply put is planning to fail. I have learned that this is one factor that cannot be ignored, this course itself provides a syllabus/plan along with other tools to use for our success. This factor also falls in line with self-discipline and motivation Waschull (2005), because it takes just that to follow any strategy/plan especially when you are doing online/distance learning. Next there is the Use it or lose it, “As soon as I’d read or study it, I put the knowledge to work through collaboration with students or at my place of employment” Roper (2007). I do exactly that, I feel this factor is important because it gives you the opportunity to put what knowledge you do have on the subject out in open dialogue with another student or co-worker. That dialogue gives you a true understanding on how well you have grasped the material in which you’ve studied which in return helps your performance. A great example of this is the current method used while writing this essay, as soon as I read each article I put together all

CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW 2.0 INTRODUCTION There exists many definitions for what distance learning or distance education Teaster and Blieszner (1999) say “the term distance learning has been applied to many instructional methods: however, its primary distinction is that the teacher and the learner are separate in space and possibly time”. The most thorough definition was proposed by Desmond Keegan (1995) a leading expert in distance education. Keegan espouses that “Distance education and training result from the technological separation of teacher and learner which frees the student from the necessity of traveling to “a fixed place, at a fixed time, to meet a fixed person, in order to be trained.” Distance learning has evolved through the…

Because there is a total lack of lectures and in person instruction, students should ask themselves whether they can learn independently. The student’s commitment is the driving force to the class, and a lackluster drive can drastically effect their experience. Online courses also typically have more homework requirements to help ensure that all of the students are appropriately engaged in the learning process, so organization and time management are crucial elements to achieving success. As the entirety of the course will be online, there is a certain level of computer skill and reading comprehension that is also necessary for a positive…
