Cyberbullying; a problem throughout this country. The increase in technology and social media (such as iPhones, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) has allowed people to send messages almost instantly throughout the internet. This also means that crude, inappropriate, and hurtful messages can be spread faster as well. This brings up the highly controversial question: “Should schools limit students online speech?” This is in debate because if they did limit online speech, that would violate the 1st amendment, one of our most treasured values that makes America the country we are. I think schools should limit online speech. That is my opinion, and I’m still pondering whether I should support limiting online speech. However, the 1st amendment applies to everything, including the web, and that is a very good counter-argument many still bring up. v. Berkeley County Schools”, it says that a student nicknamed K.K., made jeers about a classmate and how this classmate was “promiscuous”, and also created a hate website towards this individual. The classmates nickname, S.N. and his/her parents (gender not included) went to the school and filed a complaint. The harassment was obviously enough for S.N. to file a complaint, and in response, K.K. was suspended. It says, “K.K. contends that the school administrators violated her free speech rights under the First Amendment by punishing her for speech that occurred outside school,” which is true. However, the 1st amendment says you can’t make lies about another that degrades them, and that can be brought to court. However, K.K. won the case and was released from suspension. K.K. did personally degrade S.N., though, and still got away with it. I think that she should’ve gotten a few detentions, or another form of
