Victor, I agree with you on Nursing Informatics. According to the American Medical Informatics Association (2015) nurse informatics develops communication and information technologies, educators, researchers, chief nursing officers, chief information officers, software engineers, implementation consultants, policy developers, and business owners, to advance healthcare. Nursing Informatics also promotes the best health possible by integrating nursing, its information, and knowledge, with the management of information and communication technologies. Applying Informatics knowledge allows healthcare providers achieve the quality of patient care and promote the health of patients, families and communities both local and global (American Medical…
This morning I met with Ms. Smith and reviewed the status of continuity binder project and its usefulness in reducing communication and process failures. Ms. Smith, her staff, and I all believe that the binder will help Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) to function more efficiently in the setting of constant workflow interruptions. After receiving some of her personal feedback and feedback of other staff members there are a few more areas of the binder that require tweaking but the binder should be completed by next week (Goal 4). Ms. Smith also shared with me that she has been working on a fillable PDF form that will allow the Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) to generate more accurate reports and it will expedite the notification of Labor and…
The Impact of IOM Report on Nursing Nursing plays a dynamic role in Patient care. Nurses educate, advocate, care and comfort patients. Moreover, nurses do 24 hour bedside care; they assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care and comfort of the patient. Furthermore, they communicate and collaborate on patient care with other care team members.…
Jasmine, I liked the points you made about collective bargaining. We, nurses, stand strong when we are together and have common goals to improve our practice. For years nursing wages have not been updated regardless of the job market and the enhanced patient needs and requirements. Other health care occupations had their salaries increased which is the case with pharmacists (Lovell, 2006), but nursing wages have not been touched. Lovell states that one of the reasons might be that 92% of the nurses are female, so such unfair treatment can be considered discrimination.…
High patient to nurse ratios takes away with the nurse communicating with the patient and family effectively and developing trust. Relieving patient fear and anxiety can be a challenge when the nurse has less time to spend with the patient because of increased patient load. This does not allow the nurse to develop trust with the patient and family and discuss details about the patient and their treatment. There are ways to improve this type of care, but it will take dedication and a hospital wide effort.…
Unionization is good for the nursing profession because it gives power and strength to nurses who can negotiate contracts in numbers and can identify working conditions, including acceptable nurse-to-patient ratios, standard of care, and overtime, pay scale, benefits, and paid time off. According to Sanders and McCutcheon (####), a major issue in the negotiations is the nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. In 1999 California became the first state to mandate minimum nurse-to-patient ratios in hospitals (Coffman, Seago, Spetz, 2002). Nurses believed in acceptable nurse-to-patient ratios and wanted to prevent jeopardizing quality patient care and prevent nurses from leaving the profession.…
Nurse to Nurse Incivility and How it Affects Performance Clinical Question Problem description The nursing profession has high rates of cases of incivility among the profession. Uncivil behavior at the workplace entails violence at the workplace, intimidation, withholding of critical information, public humiliation and intimidation and stealing credit for work not done (Casale, 2017). Despite the nursing profession being based on ethics and values of respect and integrity, it has been reported that more than eighty-five percent of registered nurses were victims of nursing workplace incivility (Casale, 2017).…
Each hospital must develop a hospital nurse staffing committee who will be responsible for implementing the plan. Any hospital found violating the requirements of the act would be penalized. The bill was introduced in Senate on April 29th, 2015 and currently referred to the Committee on Finance. At this time the committee must take action on the bill by scheduling a hearing or else the bill will “die” as in previous years. If the bill does advance and is scheduled for a public…
The proposed bill will not only benefit healthcare in a positive way, but will greatly impact patients as well. First, patients will get the help they need, and will less likely be readmitted to an inpatient facility. As a result, the overall cost that a healthcare organization would have to pay for hospitalization would be decreased. Secondly, patients will receive further care by having an on-call case manager on standby if needed.…
Customization would improveproductivity and quality of the nursing home. I found it striking that it is difficult to increase the wages and benefits of CNA’s. That is a simple way to make people want to work and stay working for you. If the pay islow, they will eventually look for a higher paying job with more advancementopportunities. This is relevant in my role in healthcare because I, myself, would notenjoy being stuck on the same level for so long.…
Thank you. I have to agree, we don't have many call outs because of the self-scheduling. As far as the Friday and Monday rule, people can still take vacation days or have someone work for them, so people can still have long weekends. I think most are happy with self-scheduling, but there are always a few that still complain about their schedule. I guess it's hard to please everyone, and that happens everywhere.…
Hospital organization restructuring, requesting licensed nurses to distinguish themselves as care coordinators with the intention of being in alignment with several other unlicensed caregivers, this has created a major strain for licensed nurses. Quality Improvement Strategy: To correct unhealthy nursing consequences and increased patient errors related to inadequate staffing issue at my organization, health care agency organization were contracted for supplemental needs, and overtime can no longer be forced on nurses. The Six Aims of Improvement: The aim of safety was addressed, with contracted health care supplemental agency to aid inadequate staffing.…
The argument I will be addressing in my persuasive essay will be about the unfair workload of nurses. I will be arguing that nurses are overworked and do not have the support of the administrators. My main argument is to have the administrators hiring more nurse staff or to lower the ratio of nurse to patient. This argument is derived from my field of work. I am an RN, and I work in the same circumstances.…
Twelve-hour nursing shifts are unsafe it should be ended because working more than 8 hour shifts are unhealthy and would cause permanent damages in the future .When overwhelming your body with constant lack of sleep working back to back night and morning shifts and stressing about the lack of time that you are spending with your family .I believe that working overwhelming shifts can affect your physical and mental state of mind but also can affects the way you complete your job and the amount of time you spend time with you family . When having long nursing shifts cause a person to be physically exhausted and drain.…
Evaluation After initiating the implementation of the template, an evaluation process must follow. The implementation of a SBAR formatted; standardized template would most likely decrease the amount of time it takes to deliver patient handovers, while improving the quality of handovers delivered. Additionally, the template would assist nurses in highlighting pertinent information within their patient handovers, leading to the comprehensive handovers. Furthermore, the initiation of the standardized template will facilitate improvements in communication and teamwork among nurses, while providing a framework for the sharing of pertinent information. According to Wilson (2007), standardized templates for patient handovers not only serve as a facilitator…
