In this day and age, the development of online learning has created an accessible way for adults to participate in college classes and earn a degree. As a stay at home mom of five adding classes to an already busy schedule presented a problem. Wanting to excel and complete a degree the idea of online learning presented a good fit but could I be successful? Fortunately, a study completed by Erman Yujsekturk and Ercan Top for the British Journal of Educational Technology titled; “Exploring the Link Among Entry Characteristic, Participation Behaviors and Course Outcomes of Online Learners: An examination of learner profile using cluster analysis” helped to answer this question. As a wife and mom, I do not have the available time to attend actual classes on a campus. However, the opportunity of learning online affords me the ability to fit my courses into my everyday schedule allowing me the convenience of working at my own pace without neglecting my responsibilities at home. The utilization of discussion boards provides me with the opportunity to connect with other online students which will offer the opportunity to develop relationships that could possibly be lacking in online education. The convenience of working at my own pace and in my own environment has allowed me to successfully complete work within deadlines. Additionally the article suggested that as a way to meet potential learners’ needs, online course designers should focus on designing environments with an emphasis on the learner’s individual characteristics. (Yukselturk & Top, Pg.717) I have found this to be true in my own experience as an online student. By attending Liberty University online I have the ability to learn and earn an education without giving up my biblical worldview or placing my school work before the needs of my family. Wisely managing one’s time while organizing the work needed to be done, makes for a more satisfied and successful learner. (Yukselturk & Top, Pg. 719) Discovering the importance that technology plays in the success of online learning means that one need not be afraid to step out and use the sources available. The use of discussion boards and email can be helpful tools in communicating with other students as a way to answer questions about assignments or share ideas.
