Many people spend a large amount of time weighing the differences between online schools over a more traditional type of education. There are many points in favor of attending a traditional brick and mortar school. However, the benefits offered by studying online are convenient schedules, and increased flexibility. Although there are many similarities between learning in a classroom and learning online, the differences helped guide me towards online schooling.
Traditional school provides an assortment of benefits for learning. Hands on activities and personal interactions provide a positive learning environment for many students. If a student needs face-to-face interaction and a more organized structure, then traditional schooling is the student’s most viable option. In contrast, one may need a flexible schedule and the availability to learn in a self-directed pace. In this case, online schooling is the most viable option. Lack of interaction in an online course is a disadvantage. On the other hand, a brick and mortar school setting has the interaction that is required by some students. Tight deadlines and strenuous schedules, make taking traditional courses difficult. However, online schools are easier to manage. Online school lowers the cost of necessities such as, travel, babysitters, and books. Also, it allows the student the freedom to take breaks when needed, while traditional schools discourage interruptions during class or lectures. A lot of information is available for presenting the mechanics of teaching courses online, Jennings and Bayless mention that “Although seldom discussed by colleges and universities, distant education provides a competitive opportunity for schools to offer courses beyond their geographic boundaries.” (p.184). Engaging new students they might not normally obtain. In contrast, not every student has access to the technology required to study online. This may force students to move towards the campus in which they are accepted.
