Through the rise of cyber-bullying and internet related suicide cases, it is easy to tell that humanity has progressively grown unfriendly. The fact of the matter is that with the freedom of being able to post almost anything online basic human decency has hit rock-bottom. Technology has even changed the way people meet. Internet dating has become a phenomenon in the past few years, from seeing T.V. commercials to the frequent yet annoying YouTube ads, meeting someone in person just seems obsolete anymore. It’s Both. The are some people that keep up with friends’ birthdays and current events in their lives through social media. There is, however, another group of become who befriend another with no intentions with meeting them, only to portray an online persona that is friends with a copious amount of people. We add these people online simply because we can look on their profile and see who they are. We want to be like that person, if they have three-hundred followers the we want the same. We become more like somebody’s fan then their actual friend (Price 6). We keep coming back to them because they have an online persona that we want. These online friends can give off the fantasy of a real friendship but without the camaraderie and responsibility that a friendship deserves. Being able to empathize with a group of friends is what makes such a companionship so intimate. A story online said “I used to watch Sunday sports with my dad, and during the commercial breaks we would always talk about the game or others that will be played later that day. But now when the games would go to commercial, the only thing he will do is check his phone for emails or text his wife” (Gonchar). It’s not just him, it’s all over. We can see it everyday, from kids to adults, always checking their phones like if they were to miss something then the world might
