For some, meeting someone at a bar, or on the street isn’t the easiest thing. Websites like eHarmony, Our Time, and Match have been created. Online dating use to be frowned upon, however over the past few years, online dating has lost much of its stigma because more and more people are realizing that it is a sufficient way to find someone like you. According to Aaron Smith and Monica Anderson from Pew Research Center, “In 1995, only 14% of American adults were Internet users, and online dating options were scarce. We all have families whether they are far away or with us all the time. Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter allow us to keep in contact with brothers, sisters, cousins, and parents who might live far away from us. As a result of a national telephone survey of 2,277 adults conducted April 26-May 22, 2011 “Roughly two-thirds (67%) of social media users say that staying in touch with current friends and family members is a major reason they use these social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or LinkedIn.”(Aaron Smith, Pew RC) I believe it’s extremely important to stay in touch with people we were once close to or someone you can’t see every day. Keeping a balanced social life can reduce stress within family members who don’t see each other every day. Imagine being a parent who’s child is away from college and you had absolutely no way of keeping in touch with them and making sure they are ok? Having technology like cell phones and social media allows parents to keep in contact with their kids who could be hours away. Military families now have the ability to stay in touch with loved ones while abroad. Don Faul, vice president of online operations for Facebook said “Up until 2 years ago the military had blocked most access to Facebook and similar sites because of concerns over security breaches. Now, military commanders advise troops and their families on how to keep themselves and their units safe online.”(USA
