Technology has a major impact on the education sector. This new change has made it possible for students to get their entire degree online without setting foot in a classroom. (By using this new technology it makes it possible for students to get their entire degree without ever having to go into a classroom.) Most students at UMSL have other obligations besides school. Our student body includes full time and part time workers, students with children and families to take care of, and ones that may be coming back to get a degree later in life. Although there is a fair share of full time students that dedicate all their time to academics, the majority at UMSL have other obligations that must divide their time to make room for school. The Wimba Classroom is an online classroom that is designed exclusively for education. Some of the features listed include an interactive whiteboard, application and desktop sharing, and session recording (Wimba Inc., 2009). The online classroom can be accessed by the students or professor anywhere that has the internet requirements--56k speed-- and a computer that supports the system requirements--512MB RAM. The professor has the option of either holding classes live or pre-recording them, putting them into an archive for students to view and/or listen to at a later time. The presentations can be audio, video, visual, or any combination of those options. In the live Wimba Classroom, the professor can take attendance, just as if the class were being held in a room on campus. During the class, students can respond to the professor either by microphone or by typing into a chat box on the screen. First off Wimba Classroom offers anytime access to class information for students as well as teachers to utilize during or away from the session. Wimba can use live lectures and the professor can even upload prerecorded lectures if they so choose. Wimba offers collaborative learning for all the students to participate. Live discussions between classmates and the professor to answer any questions someone may have. The collaborative learning also helps students teach and learn from each other when the class is not in session. With Wimba being an online classroom there is the advantage of having more students per professor per class. The enrollment for each class can be higher than it currently is which would allow more students to complete their degrees in less time. Wimba is available for all grades and would help student better familiarize themselves with technology and computer networking. If a student does not have access to a computer at the time of the class session they have the option to use the phone simulcast. The phone simulcast gives Wimba the option to allow students to join via phone call.
