When it's bedtime, I always face right to the empty bed nearby mine. We still haven't taken his bed out, nor have we talked about taking it out, just in case Claus comes home. But I know mom's slowly losing hope, and dad lost his a long time ago. I think mine's slipping too. Sometimes, I have dreams that he comes home and we all laugh it off, and mom cooks our favorite food, omelettes, and he talks all night long about how he missed everyone and how he's glad to be back. But those are just dreams, I guess I just need to think less about them. I have to get ready, it's sophomore orientation day and I gotta get ready. They're going to be taking our pictures and giving us our schedules. I've decided this year I'm going to start taking my classes more seriously, get involved and study more. It was reassuring to know his friends cared, but wasn't sure how to respond. He wasn't sure how comfortable he was telling his friends that Claus's disappearance made him feel depressed and empty.
"I've been better. It's hard living when someone you saw and talked to everyday just isn't there anymore." Lucas's shoulders slumped as he spoke, feeling uneasy talking about this. But he understood his friends worries, they all missed Claus too. Maybe one of these days, he'd show up. Paula put a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"It'll get better Lucas, I know it will." Paula said with a tight-lipped smile across her face, sensing how uneasy Lucas felt.
