She was a three year old chestnut mare full of personality when she came into my grandpas life around four years ago. When Prit first arrived onto my grandfather’s farm my grandpa soon discovered some bad habits she had built at her previous home. Plus, she was only three and still had many things to learn. My grandpa would spend hours devoted to working with her through these difficulties taking it slowly one step at a time. After working with her for almost a year you could really see how Prit began to trust and respect my grandpa. There was friendship between them and you could see how happy my grandpa looked when he was around her. It was the same way with Prit, she was always happy to see him when he would come walking up to the barn. One of the biggest distinctions between English and western is tack. An English saddle is much smaller than the western saddle, covering less of the horses back and creating a closer contact between horse and rider. Western on the other hand has a much longer and larger saddle, which allows the weight to be more distributed along the horse’s back. English bridles will usually be a plane brown or black leather with a fancy stitching around the edges. Western on the other hand can be anything from a fabric, plane brown or black leather, all the way up to extreme bling (jewels, stones, ect.) depending on the style of western. In both western and English you want to have a strong position that’s going to allow you horse to stay balanced and keep you moving smoothly. You want to sit up tall, keep your heels down, and keep your arms relaxed at your side. In English you have a much more contact with the horse using the reins, leg contact, and seat. Western on other hand tends to use much less contact by only using the weigh in the seat, small amounts of leg contact, and usually neck reining.
