Public shootings have become a problem in today’s society because they are becoming more and more fatal. As the years go by, the term “public…
“Invitation to a Murder” is a story in which Josh Pachter composes numerous situations of irony. Lawrence Branigan, Chief Inspector of the New York City Police Department, received and opened a letter that was sent to his apartment on 240 Centre Street. It was a stamped, formal message which stated that he was to arrive at 217A West 86th Street between the hours of nine thirty and eleven o’ clock. Branigan was disorderly as he looked over the invitation once more. Mrs. Abbott was the women that sent the letter; furthermore, Branigan recognized the name.…
The Kent State Massacre John Filo, photography major from Kent State, won the prestige Pulitzer Prize for his photo taken on the campus of Kent State University. Sadly the image captured fourteen Mary Vecchio screaming over the dead body of Jeffery Miller after he had been shot. Among Miller were three others who died after the Ohio National Guard opened fire on a chaotic protesting group of students on Kent State University. The shooting that occurred on May 4, 1970 will forever be known as the Kent State Massacre (Thomas and Hensley). Several incidents led up to the shooting, however, the Ohio National Guard should not have opened fire on the students protesting on the campus of Kent State University.…
An Escalating Problem: The frequency of deadly active shooter incidents has increased to the point active shooter incidents have become a commonality in modern American society. According to an article published by ABC News (2016), recent reports from the FBI indicate the years of 2014 and 2015 twenty active shooter incidents occurred each year. This was nearly six times more than any other time in the preceding sixteen years.…
The National Guard was responsible for the Kent State shootings. On May 4, 1970, the National Guard made an enormous mistake. Every year on May 4th, some witnesses recall the horrifying events that happened at Kent State University so many years ago.…
The op-ed piece “Mass shootings are an American problem. There’s an American solution.” was written in response to the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. On September 30, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada, a gunman opened fire on attendees at a country music concert, killing 58 and injuring well over 500. Published just four days later, at a time when emotions are heightened and people are searching for answers to the questions of how and why such a horrific event could occur, Chris Murphy appeals to that very emotion in this piece.…
Valerie Strauss' article discusses how mass school shootings affect the education of students who survive, on the Washington Post. Apparently, ever since the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, the amount of students who experienced mass shootings increased, according to a Washington post analysis. In addition, there is very little research on the psychological effects of the survivors of a school shooting. Unfortunately, there seems to be more research on the motivations behind the perpetrators.…
Americans love guns and Americans hate guns. There is a perplexing relationship within the American people and their desire for guns. American citizens are aware of the danger that follows with gun use, but still advocate to keep them legal within the states. The gruesome massacres that have occurred within American schools such as Columbine, Virginia Tech, as well as the massacre that recently occurred in Orlando, Florida at club Pulse, somehow do not resonate with the fact that this country has a very serious gun problem. The United States must figure out logical ways to make access to guns harder such as disallowing someone who has been on a FBI watch list from ever purchasing weapons.…
I became interested in researching whether there was a connection between mental illness and mass shootings mostly because of the amount of mass shootings that have occurred throughout the years. It always caught my attention because the individuals who have committed these mass shootings are said to have mental illness. I divided my research into three categories. The first one is on mental illness and I’ll explain what mental illness is. Secondly, I’ll explain mass shootings that have occurred and the individuals that carried out these attacks.…
People died every day from gun violence. Ik- Whan G. Kwon and Daniel W. Baack say “In 2000, almost30,000 persons died from firearm injuries in the United States” (134). How could this large amount of number be reached? In the United Stated, there are lots of gun shooting tragedies.…
School shootings cause a lot of sadness because children are getting injured and killed for no reason. Not only families are feeling upset, but others are too. People feel bad for families and the innocent children. People may wonder if schools have enough security and protection. Schools have a lot different ways they’re using security.…
The number of mass shooting in the United States is increasing at an alarming rate. There have been more mass shootings since 2005 than the past 23 years before that. This is for multiple reasons. Guns are readily available to whomever wants to buy them. So long as…
Jon Krakauer’s “Death of an Innocent” appeared on the Independent’s website on 11 April 1993. Krakauer, an American writer and mountaineer, mainly known for his works about the outdoors, especially mountain climbing has produces yet another amazing news article among numerous others. This specific news article in fact have been the highlight of his writing career as it paved him to write his best-selling non-fiction books—Into the Wild. After reading “Death of an Innocent” by Krakauer, I have found myself left wondering of the perpetual psyche of Chris McCandless throughout his extreme odysseys. During my reading, I sense that Chris was not an ordinary person who lived according to the preprogrammed dogma of the society.…
That day they took the lives of 13 students and wounded 23 more students. This is just a small fraction of all the mass shootings going on in America. On April 16, 2007 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia another 23 year old gunman killed 32 people and wounded an undetermined number of individuals. Again, on December 14, 2012 another shooter named Adam Lanza took innocent lives. The ones killed were twenty children and six adults who courageously put their lives before the innocent children at the Sandy Hook elementary school (Atkin).…
