The first to emerge is the white horse, who is thought to be Christ or the Antichrist. The second to emerge is the red horse, who is able to “take peace from earth and to make men slay each other”, representing war. The third horse is black and it’s rider has scales, making references to weighing grains in a similar fashion to times of famine. Therefore, the third horse is seen as a symbol of famine. The fourth horse is pale, and it’s rider is Death itself, bringing famine, plagues, and demise.
