Ultimately, Randle escapes the prison and finds himself in a better place. Unfortunately, the only way to accomplish this is by Chief murdering Randle. Acts 1&2 foreshadow this in multiple scenes. For example, the first time Randle receives electroconvulsive therapy, he walks back into the ward like a zombie. Another key example is when Chief and Randle discuss escaping the ward. Chief mentions how his “poppa” relates to Randle in many ways. “He did what he pleased… And every time he put the bottle to his mouth, he don’t suck out of it. It sucks out of him until he’d shrunk so… wrinkled and yellow even the dogs don’t know him… I’m not saying they killed him, they just worked on him, the way they’re working on you.” This scene really foreshadows Randle’s fate. With swift camera movements, director Miloš Forman, conveys tension very well. The fast paced film requires quick camera movements to help convey the utter chaos taking place in the psych ward. Frames of Nurse Ratched and her icy stare help audiences enjoy hating her. The close ups frames on her face also reveal her unwavering power. Her heartless expressions help depict how emotionally unstable she is and demonstrates that fine line between the patient and worker in mental wards. This camera shot is used during the group therapy because she commands those sessions. It’s a sign of female dominance. This camera angle helps build tension because audiences can truly grasp just how much power Nurse Ratched has which is the main conflict Randle must overcome to escape the prison-like ward. During some more chaotic scenes, like the one where Cheswick demands cigarettes and when Billy is punished for sleeping with Candy, many people are yelling and it is difficult to conheretenly pick out one single voice.
