Comparison/Contrast Research Paper Assignment Fiction, non-fiction, crime, mystery, action etc., books and movies have many various aspects to what they could be, because of the difference between each genre. The era and the setting of the plot can affect the story and feel of the book. For example, if someone changed an action book into a love story some parts would have to be changed and aspects of romance would need to be added, but if you changed the action movie’s time that its set in almost everything would change, from the way they spoke, and even the actions they took. During the time of the book, in the 1950’s, people were very strict when controlling people in the psychiatric hospitals, just as Nurse Mildred Ratched was in the story, in the book McMurphy opposes Ratched and challenges her authority. He takes her career apart and embarrasses her which causes her to lose all authority over the other patients. This type of action wouldn’t be allowed in the present day because of the change in how strict the hospitals have become, even the slightest opposition would result in problems and the patient would be confined and have their privileges stripped. Another direct correlation to this opposition would be, the amount of security the hospitals had. During the 1950’s mental institutions had few workers and little security. According to, Human Rights Watch, a human rights organization based in the United States “This process was catalyzed by passage of the federal legislation [provided] seed funding for the establishment of comprehensive mental health centers in the community” (2003). (this is not cited properly) Unlike the past, institutions had to be put up and there was funding for the institutions to be maintained and constantly have adequate staff in local communities and for prison use.
