The first time the class met, we were in the smallest dance room. A long wooden bar ran across the back wall, parallel to a mirror covered wall. On the shelves around the room were what seemed like hundreds of trophies that the local high school dance team had won over the years. The first thing I remembered thinking was “Wow, I’m going to have trophies just like this one day!” and little did I know that my reward from baton twirling would be much greater than any trophy or medal. My first time putting a baton in my hand, at the age of 7, was definitely something that should have been recorded and sent to YouTube. My coach started us off with the shiny plastic batons so we did not hurt ourselves, but of course I somehow found a way to do just …show more content…
After years of those endless practices, local competitions and a lot of devotion I competed in the National Baton Twirling Association Nationals. NBTA Nationals is one of the top three hardest competitions in the baton world and definitely not one that twirlers attend assuming they will win. Standing in the front of the gymnasium packed full of onlookers and having the shiny gold first place medal placed around my neck at the NBTA Nationals was an indescribable feeling. In that moment on stage, I realized that I knew the true definition of passion, and had found my

Not only did we want to perform well at the competition, but also show people that Ohio State has a real team of baton twirlers. To make this possible, each member needed to contribute to working outside of team practices and keeping each other accountable of our end goal. In addition, it was important for me to overcome the fact that my commitment to practicing was not to perfect my own tricks, but to perfect my contribution for our team to perform well. Being the new member, I was determined to adapt to the circumstances of our team and working alongside with new teammates. Our strong intention allowed us to depend on each other’s individual commitments and unite our focuses in making our end goal achievable.…

Something happened on my dance team this past summer where I received an award for “Most Improved Dancer”. I was feeling discouraged as well as confused on what I wanted to do involving dance in general. The support from my directors and teammates could not have put a bigger smile on my face. All of the claps, hugs, and high-fives meant so much to me. .I was filled with pure happiness, but had so much uncertainty on whether I wanted to stay committed or remove myself from this group.…

Ever since I was a little girl, my parents instilled the importance of obtaining an education; therefore, every day I would go to school with the primary focus of making them proud. What I came to realize as I got older was that school is not just about getting good grades; more than that, though, it is about learning and being able to implement all my knowledge throughout the course of my daily life. The experiences I have endured throughout my years in high school have been the most crucial in the sense of allowing me to feel for what it is that I am most interested in. My extracurricular activities have helped me branch out and explore what path I want to pursue. In the midst of all these activities, I have found my true calling-- to become an anesthesiologist.…

“When your music begins, you will be in competition mode.” I took a deep breath, it was showtime. I was introduced to the world of competitive dance in August of 2011 and ever since, dance has been the outlet for all of my emotions. I started off as a shy little girl who hid in the corner, barely extending her limbs as I attempted to mock those in front of me. As time elapsed, I persevered through challenging ten hour practices and the taunting of my peers.…

Reminiscing back on the beginning of the season, I could see how terrified I had been. Although I was just in the ensemble, the pressure was still on my shoulders to perform to my best ability. Learning the dances and poses for A Thousand Cranes, I had followed the seniors exactly, right down to the way they curled their fingers or pointed their toes. I was petrified that if I did not do something precisely, I would be called out in front of the whole…

“Sending him home empty-handed at the end of a hard-fought season won’t help him learn the lesson of losing, it will teach him early that there’s no value in the attempt” (Zadrozny). Prizes such as trophies and ribbons are a controversial topic in society. Some believe that not enough are handed out to children while others believe that too many are handed out. Trophies are a symbol of victory and triumph, but children just want to feel part of a team even though they are not good enough. Putting forth an honest effort is important and doing well is the habit on which they will be repeatedly evaluated in life.…
