Amanda, I liked reading your post. I thought that it was very interesting to see the statics of the non-Indian vs. Indian. The reason that I thought it was interesting was because it was not a general statistic, but it was a very specific one. The particular subject was that interested me was the talk about suicide. “American Indian adolescents are four times more likely than non Indians to attempt suicide (Russell, 1997 pg. 300).…

"HUELGA! VIVA LA RAZA!" Cries and shouts of protest could be heard, rumbling the school grounds as Mexican-American students walked out of their homeroom classrooms to join their fellow protesters on the streets of downtown Los Angeles. Students, families, and even teachers held hands and joined one another to proclaim the corruption and racism held in Lincoln High School, along with the many schools part of the L.A. school system. Protesting went on for weeks, blowout after blowout, peaceful protestors who simply wanted their fair share of an education faced with ignorance and violence.…

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

working with Latino families especially immigrants is going to be my strength as a counselor. It will be easy to relate to them because of my own culture. At times, however, these same assumptions can create tension in my therapeutic relationships because some people do not fit my perception of issues in immigrant families. Instead I need to come with a clean slate and let the family fill me in before making any assumptions about them. While the need to prove myself could be a hard pattern of behavior to break, I believe in my ability to observe these thoughts in my interactions.…

I had very limited time to gather a full in-depth research on immigration. However I did find valuable information in the short time span that furthers my understanding of the inequality immigrants face due to negative myths and stereotypes the reflect on public perspectives and political policies. I began my research by attending a film presentation followed by a panelist discussion. The event was held on September 28, 2016 in the USU ballroom at California State University of San Marcos there was at least 500 people who showed. This connected to my topic because I am working on understanding immigration and the documentary for one had showed me empathy and understanding of people who live in Latin America.…
