Casey smiled a genuine smile. “I feel the same way, Fiona.”
Since returning to the bed and breakfast, they had become great friends. In the evenings, after dinner when the other guests had gone to bed, they would sit in the parlor. Fiona would crochet while she went over the designs for the renovations. She would occasionally ask Fiona’s opinion on colors and patterns for the furnishings, as well as paint schemes for each room.
During this time, Fiona took on the role of surrogate mother and Casey basked in feeling a mother’s love once again.

That’s been my plan from the beginning with a few minor changes for comfort and practicality, including modernizing the kitchen.” She explained, “I like to cook. You’ve been a godsend, Fiona. I couldn’t have done all this without your help. After seeing the outstanding job you’ve done restoring the bed and breakfast I knew your advice would be invaluable.”
Fiona reached across the sofa and patted her hand, “Not a problem, darlin’. I love decorating, and I’ve enjoyed spending time with you.”
During their many nighttime chats, Casey discovered Fiona had inherited the bed and breakfast from a distant cousin. The objective was to sell it until she came to Madison and fell in love with the “Old South” charm of the town. That’s when she decided to leave Ohio and move to Georgia.
After restoring the structure to its original state, she hired a couple of part-time employees to help. Ms. Emily was the first, a woman in her sixties who had lived in Madison her entire life. She was sometimes crotchety but had a good heart. The second was a young girl working her way through college. She would come in a few times a week.
She packed up the paint chips wondering if Fiona ever got lonely. “Do you think your children will ever come to live here?”
“I’m optimistic that one day they will get tired of the cold weather and shoveling snow every winter like I
