The One Child policy was one of the most important social policies ever put into effect in the world’s history. C1. Though is was an extremely famous policy, it caused much pain in its birthplace of China for a generation. C2. A generation later, it proved to be a source of economic benefits. C3. The One Child policy prevented families from having more than one child, A4, as a result of overpopulation in China. C5. Now, a decades old policy, has come to an end as a result of many problems. C6. As the era of the controversial policy that comes to an end, a new edited policy has just begun allowing two children to be born in each family. A7. One example is Feng Jianmei, a woman forced to have an abortion in her 7th month of pregnancy after her husband couldn’t pay the fine of $6, 300 for an illegal pregnancy. Feng’s case caused a nationwide outrage and a rare public apology. B16. Not only were their fines and if needed forced abortions, but there were also reported cases of female infanticide. A17. China has always favored the male sex. When the technology of cheap ultrasounds was created, allowing sex determination mid-pregnancy, it became easier to only have boys, and abort the girls. B18. From 1996-2001 the ratio of women to men were 1:23. C19. Another reason why the ratio of women to men far apart, is that younger women tend to marry older men; this leaves potential grooms without brides. C20. It would take ten years to reduce the gap between the two genders. B21. As the number of babies being born drops, so do the number of young men and women. It is the responsibility of the younger generation to take care of the older one, but with older out numbering younger, it becomes more and more difficult for the care to take place. C22.
