Conflict in “Ashes for the Wind” The purpose of a government is to protect their people, not tell them how to run their lives. But this isn’t always the case. In the short story, “Ashes for the Wind” by Hernando Tellez, a corrupt dictatorship-like government tries to force their will upon a man named Juan Matinez, the protagonist. This is the major source of conflict; it is external (man versus society).…

Laura Esquivel’s film adaptation of Like Water for Chocolate and Kate Chopin’s stories, A Pair of Silk Stockings and The Storm, share a similar theme. They all focus on the complexity of women’s struggles to discover their freedom and individuality against social norms and traditions. At first they all place their desires aside because they feel a sense of duty whether they are forced or self imposed. Eventually, each woman takes a step to fulfill their desires if only for one brief time. In the film Like Water for Chocolate Tita is struggling with the desire to be with her true love and find her independence and individuality.…
This passage is about the Walls family getting kicked out of Erma’s place so they go and buy a run down house for them to live in then fix it up so it’s more suitable to live in. Some would say that it’s what some has that would keep you going, but in this passage Jeannette Walls conveys an idea that it’s the intangible possessions that can really keep you going. The author helps convey this idea through the use of symbolism. This is a passage from Jeannette Wall’s memoir, The Glass Castle.…

Mrs. Sommers is the only really important character in the story. The boys and the girls and the neighbors don't really have enough said about them to write a “advanced paragraph” so there no real point in wasting time writing 4 or 5 pointless paragraphs. Mrs. Sommers is a wife and mother and very poor. She wants the best for her family but he is bothered in the way that she doesn't have any time or money to herself. Mrs. Sommers doesn’t want to abandon her family, but she also does not want to abandon her personal identity and the role of being a wife and mother.…
In the story of the Glass Castle Jeannette encounters countless events that significantly affect her security and well being. No child should ever be forced to find ways, (although clever), to meet their basic needs. Such as, warmth on a cold day, food when there is none, and safety when in danger. Section 1 begins with an incident that profoundly affected Jeannette to the point that she recalls it in detail.…
I can’t use you”, Jurgis did not understand what had happened. He went to a saloon and some men explained to him that “he was blacklisted!” and the cause of that was the fight he had with Ona’s boss. No one was fair with the working class people; they were simply racist towards them because of where they came from and how they were. They would not care about them and would simply destroy them just because they wanted to.…
Ona’s boss, Phil Connor, intimated and seduced her. His connections with the politician Mike Scully allowed him to get away with these brazen unlawful acts. Jurgis “made his discovery of the meaning of ‘pull’” when Connor used his political influence to keep Jurgis out of a job (Sinclair 263). Coincidentally, a desperate Jurgis took a job manipulating the political system in order to assure power for Mike Scully and other politicians that ran the city of Chicago. “Socialists were the enemies of American institutions” that needed to be destroyed through buying votes (Sinclair 268).…
The emotions and thoughts the sight of the new-born awakens in Mrs. Wilkins is hostility and disgust, rather than the gentleness and compassion of Mr. Allworthy. Mrs. Wilkins’ diction towards the baby reveals that she is an unsympathetic person which is ironic considering she represents the womanly figure in the passage. The most compelling evidence of Mrs. Wilkins’ outlook on life is within a statement she makes towards the end of the passage, “better for such creatures to die in a state of innocence, than to grow up and imitate their mothers; for nothing better can be expected of them” (64-67). The true essence of Mrs. Wilkins’ character is exposed by this one statement. Mrs. Wilkins’ view on the world is filled with such bitterness and cruelty that she rather a new-born baby perish than it have the opportunity to prosper in life.…
