Elia Kazan’s 1954 film, On the Waterfront explores how Terry Malloy’s heroism does not only come from his fighter instinct it also comes from the influential people in his life. Initially, the longshoremen exhibit a fundamental lack of courage to challenge the union however Terry successfully exposed this corruption displaying his heroism. Terry’s heroism also comes from influential people in his life such as Edie and Father Barry who act as moral advisors to Terry. Finally Terry’s instincts as a fighter allow him to have the strength and anger to fight the union.

Bother Father Barry and Edie were seen as moral advisors to Terry, mainly provoking him to confesses and bring an end to the corruption. Firstly Father Barry the religious figure and voice of reason in the film is influential in Terry’s decision to confess as he prompts Terry to use his mind instead of using his fists. Terry’s heroism is largely devolved by Father Barry as he guided him away from the negative influence instilled by the mob. Furthermore Terry’s confession to Father Barry leads to the awakening of Terry’s conscience, as Father Barry explained, “your conscience should do the talking.” Edie is the second moral advisor to Terry and to two have a stronger connect as they have a love for one another. Edie is seen as an innocent and kind, with different view of life than Terry, where she believes; “shouldn’t everybody care about everybody else” whereas Terry has a “do it to him before he does it to you” mind set. Edie provokes Terry heroism with again awakenings Terry’s conscience and saying that “you let your conscience tell you what to do.” Kazan further highlights Terry’s change to a heroic character with the use of symbols especially with Joey Doyle’s jacket which serves as a symbol of their dedication to their consciences. Each of the characters who possess the jacket, Kayo and Terry eventually value their commitment to their principles “right down the
