On the Waterfront illustrates the life of a former boxer, Terry Malloy. The terms “bum” and “class” are used to describe the main character, Terry. He is known as a “bum” because he wears shaggy clothes and works at the waterfront. However, to have “class” is to be respected and known for a good deed. He misses out on a big chance to have class but luckily, he is able to get a second chance. Terry is able to achieve a class status in the end when he decides to take down Johnny Friendly and his gang.
