From a Consumer to a Student Mark Edmundson, author of On The Use of Liberal Education, easily criticizes the culture of education. Education is really important to many students. One goes to college to receive a degree on what they studied so that they can have a decent job. Edmundson’s article explains how universities, students and teachers focus less on education and concentrate more on a consumerist society. Edmundson focuses on the change of education; how colleges and students don’t focus on education. Most of Edmundson’s ideas are accurate because one can see how the course of society is changing our education. Campus culture is what needs to change. In college, students want to receive the highest grade so that they can be part of the Dean’s List or look good on their resumes. Edmundson mentions how some professors soften the grades of their students. I agree with Edmundson with this reason because at the previous university I attended, my math professor exempt most of the class because of her absences throughout the semester. She ‘felt bad’ because she didn’t have time to teach her class. The worst part was that students believed they got exempt because they were ‘good enough’ in math. What caught my attention was when Edmundson mentions “computer generated exchanges among students” (330). This proves that because technology is advancing, many schools, students, and teachers are relying too much on it. Edmundson wanted to show that because technology is advancing, there are not many people who speak in class. On the first day of my Latin American Studies class, my professor told the class that she wanted the class to be active, social, and gain new vocabulary. My professor wanted to do this because she knew how technology is taking over our lives, which is making people become unsocial and unable to learn new vocabularies. Education is really important, that is why there should be a limit on the use of
