The jacket was just a figurehead, a trophy for someone to say “I killed a Royal.” Andy realizes that “He wanted to take off the jacket;” to be more than a Royal. “The jacket only had one meaning now,” a brand showing him to be one of an elite group, a worthy prize to take down, and that “The jacket was a stupid and meaningless thing that was robbing him of his life.” As one of his final acts of living, Andy decides that “He wanted the jacket off his back,” (Hunter 7) so when hopefully Laura, his girlfriend, and others would find him, they would see him for the man he was, not just a boy in a street gang, an insignificant casualty.…

Robbie was hit three times and died on the front lawn” (119). Robbie’s shooting appeals to pathos as unfortunate and tragic. It is clear that the police did not know how to properly deal with a mentally ill person, and killing someone is definitely not the right decision. Earley also describes another situation in which a Vietnam War veteran named Beatty was shot 14 times for fleeing after waving a pocketknife in front of a manager at a cafeteria. Beatty had often thought he was still fighting the North Vietnamese and wasn’t mentally stable.…

Text-to-Text relation: I don’t acquire a very solid text- to- text connection to “On the Sidewalk Bleeding”. My reasoning as to why I don’t acquire a solid connection is because the genre of books I regularly read is relatable as not very many of the books I read are from the tragedy category. The text-to-text connection that I did make was when Andy talked about marrying Laura one day, as it brought me back to the “Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. In this novel, the foil of the “Hunger Games”, Peeta was brutally wounded by his allies, to after which he was found by Katniss, the protagonist. Katniss took Peeta into a cave and aided him as best as she could, to which Peeta confessed his love for Katniss and wished he helped Katniss earlier in their village (district).…
