To start with, a force that comes into play in the story “On the sidewalk Bleeding” by Evan Hunter is the main character Andy himself. Being in such a renowned gang ‘Royal’ it should have been known to him that he can and will be attacked anywhere and everywhere by rival clan(s). “He had heard the voice saying, ‘That’s for you Royal!’”(Pg.1 Hunter). Generally speaking the attacker would not have cared if a person who is not in an gang walked by, but Andy belonged to the Royal who might have hurt or even killed, one or more of the members in the rival gang which caused the person to attack Andy to take revenge. In addition the store he went to get cigarettes was closed “...found the candy store closed.” (Pg.1 Hunter). Andy should have just went back to his girlfriend in which case he would not have been ambushed but his desire for cigarettes was more. Likewise in “The end of the Party" by Graham Greene it had been a similar case for Francis. “But she was not the first to notice Francis Morton’s stillness, where he had collapsed against the wall at the touch of his brother’s hand” (Pg.7 Greene). Francis had been scared of hide and seek since last year. “His cheeks still bore the badge of a shameful memory, of the game of hide and seek last in the darkened house…”(Pg.2 Greene). His memory of hide and seek has now become fear where he cannot handle the dark, as a party is approaching and knowing there will be hide and seek he tries to convey the message “You can say I’m ill.
