3 On the pGLO Transformation lab focuses on transforming bacteria with a gene that has a code of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) which comes from jellyfish that causes them to glow in the dark. The lab shows the process of moving genes from one organism to another with the aid of a plasmid because the plasmids can transfer back and forward allowing the to share their traits. pGLO plasmid encodes the gene of GFP and a gene for resistance to the antibiotic ampicillin. The gene of GFP can be activated by adding sugar arabinose to the cell’s nutrients that causes the glow under a UV light.
