The Consequences Of Suicide In Shakespeare's Hamlet By William Shakespeare

Omission William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is the reason for the consequences that have arisen from his inability to act upon his wishes. Hamlet himself has repeated on numerous occasions that, upon hearing of the vile deed Claudius has done in murdering his father, he wishes to take revenge and murder Claudius. However, Hamlet failed to complete his task because of his morality, his uncertainty, and his intelligence.

Throughout the play, it is pretty clear and evident that Hamlet is a devoted christian which is one of the main reasons that forced Hamlet to delay the murdering of Claudius. He has demonstrated on numerous occasions that had it not been for the morality codes that went along with being a christian, he would’ve committed several

While Hamlet is extremely depressed with his uncle murdering his father and marrying his mom only two months since his death, the problem Hamlet has with dying is that he doesn’t know exactly what happens when we die. He is scared about the thought of what he will become should he die and this ties in with the acts of uncertainty he has displayed throughout the play which I will get more into later. Now, we see that Hamlet doesn’t see committing suicide as a viable option because of the religious restrictions and unknown consequences in the afterlife so he has to figure out a way on how to morally murder Claudius which Hamlet does so by recreating the play “Murder of Gonzago”. Following the play that Hamlet has arranged of “Murder of Gonzago” to confirm his suspicion of the guiltiness of Claudius, where he has successfully done by the action shown by Claudius where he storms out in anger, meaning that it allowed Hamlet to morally kill Claudius. But shortly before he finally attempts to murder Claudius, he begins to pray. This is a problem for Hamlet because in his eyes Claudius is confessing his sins and while it would be easy for him to kill him at that exact moment, it would not avenge his father’s death because Hamlet knows that his father was killed while he was asleep which meant …show more content…
And so he goes to heaven
And so am I revenged. That would be scanned.
A villain kills my father, and for that,
I, his sole son, do this same villain send
To heaven.” (3.3.77-83)
Showing that Hamlet believed that should he murder Claudius during this exact moment, Claudius would be sent to heaven rather than hell. Should he send him to heaven, Hamlet believed that this wouldn’t avenge his father 's death but would rather be “hire and salary (3.3.84).” However the one thing that Hamlet didn’t know at the time was that Claudius was never truly repenting his sins and Claudius knew he wasn’t, as he was caught saying “My words fly up, my thoughts remain below; Words without thoughts never to heaven go (3.4.102-103).” shortly after.

Uncertainty is one of the most prevalent themes in the story of Hamlet, it is arguably one of the main reasons if not the main reason that caused Hamlet’s inevitable demise. Since his interaction with the supposed ghost of his father, he has never been able to make up his mind on whether or not it is truly his father or if it’s a spirit trying to tempt him into murdering Claudius and destroy Hamlet saying:
“Angels and ministers of grace defend us!
Be thou a spirit of health or goblin

But in our circumstance and course of thought 'Tis heavy with him, and am I then revenged?” (3.3.74-84). Hamlet always had trouble making up his mind to take action, although he can act vigorously at critical moments when he doesn 't have time to think, Hamlet told himself that this is not the right moment to kill him because Claudius was in a state of grace and might go to heaven, whereas Hamlet 's father was killed asleep and did not have time to repent for his sins. Hamlet decided to wait and kill the king "When he is drunk asleep, or in his rage, / or in th ' incestuous pleasure of his bed; /At gaming, a-swearing, or about some act / That has no relish of salvation in 't" (3.3.88-92), and this was the part where hamlet started to delay the death of Claudius due to trying to plan the best way to kill Claudius and not send him to heaven so he wouldn’t be doing him…

According to Karen Kay "in following the ghost’s command to exact vengeance upon Claudius, it is not clear whether Hamlet would be dispensing divine justice, or, led by the Devil" (Kay 2010). Although this is made clear that he's not led by the devil when Claudius unintentionally proves he's guilty during The Murder of Gonzago. Despite Kay claiming that its not clear, she also makes another argument stating that "Hamlet’s ideas about heaven are flawed" (Kay 2010) because he doesn't kill Claudius while he's praying. While in the contrary he is very aware of the concept of heaven, he knows that if Claudius is truly resentful for his sins, there's a chance that he'd be forgiven and wouldn't go to hell. Hamlet can't tell if Claudius means his prayer because he's spying on him.…

“Perhaps the single most debated question about Hamlet is ‘why does it take him so long to avenge his father’s murder?’” (Evelyn O’Connor 1). In Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, the titular character delays murdering Claudius, thus allowing many of the events in the play to transpire. It is Hamlet who initially points out the delay, and it continues to be a major part of the play throughout. The question remains, however, as to why it takes him so long to kill Claudius.…
