On June 12th, 2016, Omar Mateen opened fire on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida killing 49 people and injuring 53 others in a hate crime and alleged terrorist attack. After a three-hour long standoff with the Orlando Police Department, Mateen was shot and killed by officers at the scene. This was the most fatal single gunman mass shooting and the deadliest act of violence towards the LGBTQIA+ community in American History. Due to his pledge of allegiance to ISIS on a 911 call with the Orlando PD shortly after the shooting began, it is also recorded as the most fatal terrorist attack in the U.S. since 9/11. However, after further investigation, the CIA found no ties between Mateen and ISIS.

Lucie where he attended Mariposa Elementary school. He was known as a troubled student who was verbally abusive, aggressive, and rude. As he grew older, these habits followed him. He continued to create conflicts with other students to the point of having to eventually be removed and placed in a different class. Classmates have said that he was a bully towards girls and that he acted like he was superior to everyone. They also said that he himself was bullied due to his weight and race. In High School, Mateen continued with this concerning behavior. When he was fourteen he was arrested, and expelled from school due to a fight in one of his classes. He was then sent to an alternative school where he had an incident during the 9/11 attacks where he made jokes about Osama Bin Laden being his uncle and teaching him how to shoot guns. Shortly after the attacks on the world trade center, he imitated planes crashing and exploding into buildings on his school bus. He was then removed and sent to a third high school after fist fighting with another student. By the time he graduated, Mateen had been suspended for a total of 48 days as punishment for injuring and fighting other
