Olivia Witte is a nurse charged with the task of bringing together an interdisciplinary team of internal and external members to develop and implement a complex critical pathway (Huber, 2014). As the team facilitator, Olivia faces several problems including resistance from physicians, team member’s uncertainty of their roles, and the absence of essential team members necessary for completing the critical pathway (Huber, 2014). For instance, the dietary representative lacks commitment to the project, while the local home health agency is absent due to competing priorities (Huber, 2014). Furthermore, trust and communication are critical to building effective interdisciplinary teams (Huber, 2014). Nurse Witte must assess the team’s readiness and adapt her behavior and other resources to close the gap between the current situation and what she hopes to achieve (Huber, 2014). To establish effective communication, Olivia will analyze the team’s functioning and use this information to develop strategies to improve performance (Pollard & Wild, 2014). Nurse Witte will facilitate the interdisciplinary team meetings by carefully listening and controlling the direction of the meetings toward goal attainment (Huber, 2014).
What Mode of Communication Should Nurse Witte Use?
Interpersonal relationship skills are essential and may include persuasion or negotiation to convince the team to work together (Huber, 2014). Nurse Witte can move the team in the right direction by focusing dialogue on the goals and provide the group a description of the roles necessary to meet their objectives (Huber, 2014). As the team’s readiness increases the leader will clarify the group’s responsibilities, and when the team becomes more cohesive, they may become self-managed (Huber, 2014).
