Olivia Walton: Servant Leadership

Patisepa,
Thank you for your post. Your selection of The Waltons, is one that I never would have chosen, yet I am glad that you selected it, as it brings back many memories from my youth. Olivia Walton is an iconic example of leadership for this family. As I consider this character, I see her in terms of a servant leader who attends to her family. Northouse (2013) defines servant leadership, as that in which one is “attentive to the needs of followers, empower them, and help them develop their full human capacities” (p.248). In this regard, Olivia resembles my own mother. While we did not have a large family, my mother was always there, as a leader, helping my brother and I develop our gifts, and be persistent in our development. I suppose

Leadership styles include democratic, autocratic, laissez-faire as well as servant leadership. Of the varied styles, servant leadership is the most appealing and interesting to study as it draws attention to the servant leader, “as one who is a servant first” (Greenleaf, 1977). Likewise, Spears and Lawrence (2002) have suggested that at its core, servant leadership is a long-term, transformational approach to life and work (p. 4). Over the years, many leaders have emerged and because of their actions, performance, and traits they are hailed as servant leaders. This includes, but is not limited to: Pope Francis, also known as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Baker, Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, and W.E.B. Du Bois.…

My definition of leadership is very simple: leadership is having the ability to mobilize and empower a group towards a common goal. I find that with a much general definition of leadership as a base, it allows for different styles and theories to come from it. My preferred leadership style, for example, is the servant leadership model. The servant leadership model was formalized by Robert K. Greenleaf. My leadership model, as similar as it may be to that of Greenleaf's, came from home.…

In recent years, the sports world has become plagued with unethical and immoral scandals. A study conducted by Burton, Peachey, and Wells (2017) evaluates the role of servant leadership in creating and maintaining a more ethical climate within collegiate sports. With scandals such as Jerry Sandusky's sexual misconduct at Penn State, academic scandals in various schools, sexual misconduct at Baylor, Maimi and others, it leads one to realize the collegiate sports culture needs a drastic overhaul. Burton et al. (2017) propose that organizational climates that lead to unethical behavior among leaders, administrators, and coaches seem to be more the norm than the exception in Sports organizations, and therefore needs an immediate cultural reform in the ranks of leadership.…

Trudging through damp, snake infested grass, I reached down and started to collect hundreds of cans, wrappers, and other miscellaneous trash items. As I walked through this filthy lot, I realized how different this area of Rockford, Illinois was from my home town. With the help of over 200 workers, including myself, we were able to change the face of many people's lawns and hopefully inspire the house owners to change their habits forever. The club I am involved with at school that allowed me to participate in project 10-13, the annual cleaning of an area of Rockford, is Servant Leadership.…

As a Veteran myself I actually embody this type of leadership approach Servant Leadership is the “team” approach. I wouldn’t ask anyone of my subordinates to do anything I wouldn’t do myself, no matter what service or section we are in we all have the same mission and that’s to help fellow Veterans in need. I receive my care at the VA and I’ve served in six (6) services from Telephone Operator to Administrative Officer so I have a full 360 degree view and assessment from Veteran receiving services to employee serving Veterans I think that gives me a unique insight to our operations. I emphasize streamlining workflow processes, and implementing the e-government initiatives, here is an example of that mindset.…

My group consisted of fellow classmates Jake Geiger, Kay Saguiped, Colton Woyak, and Chase Lundry. For our chosen service project, our group decided to team up with the Carroll Student Veterans Organization (CSVO) in order to help create, develop, and implement a veteran focused service project. After much brainstorming and decision making, our group and the CSVO decided to do a banner/holiday card event during the week of Veterans Day (November 9-13). At this event, members from our group, the CSVO, as well as the Carroll University Republicans would take shifts tabling an area where participants could sign a giant banner supporting our country’s veterans, to be hung in the Milwaukee VA Medical Center, as well as an area where they could…

Before I began this journey of going back to school to get my degree I did not know if I could do what was needed to finish. However, as I have gotten into my coursework and started to learn what it is to be a leader, there have been concepts and terms that I have clung on to. For instance, cultural diversity, conflict resolution, decision making, problems solving, quality, and now servant-leadership. I have been an IT professional for over twenty years, starting off as a pc technician that supported faculty and staff at OU with their computer issues at the College of Engineering. Then moving into a management role, providing direction to my team to continue to give customers excellent support, guidance, and knowledge to the rest of campus.…
