Olivi Liv's Short Story

It’s a tradition I always hoped would never fade, but sometimes new traditions come to mix with the old and soon you can’t recall of a moment when they weren’t in tandem. Two years ago one more tradition was added to our little Christmas affair and a year after that something extraordinary happened because of it.
The night was lit by only my phone screen and the street lights that zoomed past. The singing is what made me nervous. I’d made Olivia and Norah go through the songs at least four times.

Her first choice would've been to talk all the way to the front porch. A love for conversation is most definitely a prominent trait that runs our family, though talking would have ruined the surprise. We walked quietly up the three steps. The same three steps as always.
Since I’m the oldest, it was my job to hold the personally decorated cookie cake. I had held it the first time too on her 99th Christmas. Three songs came and went with my hands freezing from the December cold. Even though I’m sure we didn’t sound like we belonged in the opera, we knew Granny wouldn’t care. She smiled as we came inside. She made her way back to the couch as Grandma turned the volume down on the TV.
Rosie greeted us at the door wagging her tail and jumping up onto our legs. Happy to see her, I picked her up and all three of us made our way into the small room. The Christmas tree was the biggest and brightest thing in the room. It was a cone of light with specks of color next to the piano. Grandma pulled up a chair across from Granny. I just sat straight on the floor and played tug of war with the dog. Grandma told us to sit down for a

Tamales Through Time This year’s craziness and smells of carne and my family gathering in my grandparents’ kitchen brings a big, bubbly smile to my face, like always, because I know this means the official start of Christmas, and Christmas means I get to be with my family and Santa is going to bring me presents! My mom says that she heard that I’m on Santa’s nice list for the 5th year in a row! I always look forward to tamale making because I get to be around all my cousins and aunts and uncles and watch them make yummy food for our Christmas Eve feast while I make gingerbread houses! And every year when I ask if I can help this time, grandma always explains while grinning that “you can’t help with the tamales until you’re tall enough to reach the counter because someone so tiny will get knocked into the masa and then we will have tamales that taste like Alejandria!…

Over each present we wrapped, we giggled, shared stories, and he usually told me special memories of my talented grandmother, who unfortunately passed away. Present after present, we wrapped and placed each one under the shimmering Christmas tree making more memories together. At the end of the enduring night, the living room floor would be covered with various strips of glossy, crumpled wrapping paper, acting as if it was my Grandpa Ray’s new carpet. Finally, at our annual family Christmas party, everyone opened their gift, and together, my grandpa and I watched their faces beam with an ear-to-ear smile across my…

Throughout history names were given to newborn babies by their parents. Thanks to my father, I’m named Tasha. Occasionally babies would be named after a deceased relative or because they like the name but my name came when my father was praying to God and he told dad to name me Tasha. Cool, right? Afterward, my mother calls me lil’mama and chocolate drop when she’s proud of me and is bragging about me to her friends or coworkers, which is often.…

Every Christmas Eve our family gathers around the coffee table in our apartment in New York City. During the day we go to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and buy chocolate candies from the Greenwood Pastry on the corner. Uncle Riley leads the way as we walk the streets until the light begins to fade between the office towers and the crippled gargoyles forever perched on the corners of the buildings that illuminate a golden age gone by. We laugh together and reminisce about the previous Christmases we have spent together. The elevator seems quieter on these nights, almost as if it has a respect for the holiday, but I know it’s just because we’re all crammed in there together.…

For as long as I can remember a tradition in the Janowitz household was making Christmas cookies. My mom and I made cookies as basic as sugar cookies to double chocolate chip peanut butter. The house would smell like chocolate for days and it would take weeks to remove all of the sugar from the counter and floors. However, it was all worth it. The childhood fantasies within me were content and I even became creative with the cookies.…
