Olive's Ocean Character Analysis

Decent Essays
Olive’s Ocean by Kevin Henkes is a novel that was awarded the Newbery Honor. It’s about a young girl: Martha Boyle. She dreams of becoming a writer, yet she is conflicted as to what to write about. Although her grandmother, Godbee gives her the inspiration Martha needs. Today I will talk about a gift I would deliver to Godbee, why Godbee would make a good friend, and the emotions that Martha feels in this point of the novel. First of all, Godbee is an interesting character. She is always there for are grandchildren during the good and bad times. Also I know she has seen a mural of things in her lifetime. If I’m stereotyping I would have to say that Godbee is an old, wise woman with good values. Yet Godbee likes to explore and try new things in this ever changing world. That is why I would give her the blessing of have a sense of taste and smell again. This gift would allow Godbee to smell the light sweeten of a rose or taste the bright acidity of an orange. Letting her experience the smell the salty …show more content…
Well, she has many great qualities; she’s loving, caring, and understanding. Godbee is a great mother and grandmother. She always puts others before her. For example, Martha and Godbee make a deal to teach each other something new about them everyday. Well, Martha always shares and Godbee always listens. Afterwards Martha leaves forgetting that her grandmother still needs to share her piece. Yet Godbee doesn’t mind because she wants the best for Martha. So she puts Martha’s needs above her own. Additionally, Godbee is very wise and has a lot of common sense. Which to me is very important. She always knows what to do in a conflict situation. She tells it like it is and doesn’t sugar coat it. Those reasons are why I would want her to be my friend. Someone I can lean on and tell all of my concerns. I know she would listen no matter what. Plus, she is older and would know more about life and could guide me on the right

In Sue Goyette’s Ocean, the “never objectifiable depth,” which is both ontological and epistemological, is the Atlantic Ocean. Goyette imagines the ocean as a mythical surface from which all things, knowledge, and cultural practices rise to shape the daily lives of a small community of ocean dwellers living in the coastal city of Halifax, Canada. What makes Goyette’s corpus of work particularly interesting for environmental criticism and interspecies discourses is that in her contemporary poetic universes a belief in pure individuality either does not exist or is seen as misguided. Her poetry relies mostly on a language that is semantically enriched by an…

She was strong and loyal to her friend and her family (despite what had happened to her while she was with her mother). I think one of the things I loved the most about her was how realistic her grief was. Sure, there was hate towards her mother for doing what she did – but it never took over and she still felt grief. She reminded me of a trapped dog, sweet and cuddly to those who showed her kindness but a rabid animal to those with opposite intentions. She does some pretty silly things though, dumb and completely idiotic things, but it didn’t take away from her character as a whole.…

She is well-spoken in a way that her words wash over you in a calm wave. She sets a good example of how a good speaker should speak patiently and considerately, while still expressing her opinion deliberately and being true to her identity. She is deeply in touch with her faith and her words display her intelligence. I would say that most people find that rather appealing about her, as most go to her for wisdom. I, myself, will usually turn to her for guidance.…
