Did you know that most of Minnesota’s iron ore country was less than 100 miles away from Lake Superior. The Oliver mining company in Minnesota started out small. But unlike many other small businesses it grew to one of the most successful iron mining companies in Minnesota. What it was like in the beginning years of the Oliver mining company. Henry Oliver was rich but not rich enough to afford his own mining operation all by himself. He hired two of the richest men in the world, John Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie. They used to use shovels and steam powered trains now they use electric shovels and diesel trains. There are thousands of workers in the iron industry with low wages. This job is very dangerous and requires lots of time and effort. Mining iron is a difficult and low wage job. But without the workers the iron industry would be a bust.
