Oliver Hall Observation

Improved Essays
Participating and observing the different interactions in Oliver Hall among the students and Sodexo workers I focused first on students I knew, because I did not want to assume their race/ethnicity based on looks. From observing this I noticed that students whose race/ethnicity fell under the category of a minority (Black/African American, Latino(a)/American) seem to have more meaningful conversations than other races/ethnicities. It was difficult to analyze each conversation because there was usually a long line waiting to get inside Oliver Hall, but the Sodexo workers either smiled or took extra time with students they knew/had a conversation before. Being Latina and actually knowing the Sodexo workers, I noticed that they did this for me …show more content…
The specific questions for my survey were: do you eat at Oliver Hall (yes or no), how often do you eat at Oliver Hall(1-4 times a week, 5-8 times a week, 9 + times a week), what race/ethnicity do you identify with (White/American, Black/African American, Native American/Alaskan American, Asian/American, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Latino(a)/American, Other), Sodexo workers are friendly/helpful (yes to a great extent, yes to a small extent, sometimes, no not at all), and do you interact with the Sodexo workers when you go to Oliver Hall, (yes to a great extent, yes to a small extent, sometimes, no not at all). The first two questions were just to eliminate people who did not go to Oliver Hall, and to see if they go often enough to be a familiar face to the Sodexo workers. The next three questions were to analyze if race/ethnicity affected the interactions among Sodexo workers. Out of 61 respondents 43 responded yes. Approximately 42 percent identified as white, 14 percent black, 2 percent Native American/Alaskan American, 21 percent asian, 7 percent Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and 35 percent latino(a). The data would be a little bias due to the fact that there were more white people that responded than others, but latino(a) was really close added more balance to the survey. The four question asked how students personally felt about Sodexo workers, and most said they are to a great extent friendly/helpful, but Latino(a)s chose this answer the most at 80 percent. No one chose the answer of ‘no, not at all’ but the second rate answer was ‘sometimes’ and White/Americans chose that the most at 11 percent. The final question involved people’s personal opinion on the amount of interaction and latino(a)s were the highest respondents of ‘yes, to a great extent’ at approximately 47 percent. No one answered ‘no, not at all,’ but

In addition, when I gave my survey out I tried to give it out to most of the races here at the school but I got more hispanic people than any others. There was a point where all the other classmates in my class who gave out the survey all came in and we analyzed the results of everybody’s answers. Then from there I saw that 61% of people that were surveyed were hispanic and that 28.3% of people were from the tenth grade. That’s actually pretty good because we gave out the survey and my classmates and I are all freshmen.…

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

A geriatric social worker develops a very lengthy scale to assess the degree of staff sensitivity to the needs of residents in nursing homes. This scale is designed to be completed by both staff and residents. According to Rubin & Babbie (2016), this scale may be vulnerable to common sources of systematic and random error. As discussed by Rubin & Babbie (2016), sources of systematic error in measurement scales originate from biases during data collection in which a pattern emerges indicating a consistent inaccurate portrayal of the concept being measured. A bias response distorts the measurement with answers based on the respondent’s personal opinion or beliefs.…

National identities are very much manifested in the social relationships, cultural expressions, and socio-economic experiences of a borderland community. In the U.S. there is so much unique diversity and I am going to prove this using the CSU Long Beach campus. My group and I from my history class took a fieldtrip around campus to analyze the different cultures and people that interacted on campus as well as one event that we attended. Throughout class we also read many stories on cultural borderlands such as Imagined Communities, written by Benedict Anderson and Cultural Borderlands, written by Rosaldo. According to Rosaldo cultural borderlands are the “cultural inconsistencies, conflicts, and contradictions” within a culture (Rosaldo 28).…

The article that I found interesting and it is related to my topic is “Immigrant Environmental Behaviors in New York City” by Max J. Pfeffer and J. Mayone Stycos, Cornell University. The goal of the research is to compare environmental behaviors of immigrants and the native born to answer questions about potential impacts of immigration in the US environment. I chose this article because it awakes another topic in the already problematic social issue called immigration which most of the people has discuss about it. I believe this is awaking an idea from the no-immigrants trying to blame the environment contamination on immigrants besides.…

This class is the most well-behaved of the three classes and seems to comprehend the material more easily than the other three classes that I observe. From my observation, the class is about sixteen males and twelve females. Of all the classes I observe they are all predominately white, with only six minority students between all three classes. This class specifically has one Hispanic student.…

For my Do-It-Yourself Primatology project I chose to research how Indiana University male and female students behave differently in public when they are eating with a group of friends, versus eating on their own among strangers. I found this question to be thought provoking because of the fact that Indiana University is a very diverse school with people from many different cultures and backgrounds. For this experiment I broke the variables down into four different categories; my first category was five male students who were eating alone, second, five male students who were eating in groups, third, five female students who were eating alone, and finally five female students who were eating in groups. While conducting this experiment I used…

The scientific method of inquiry has five main steps that include, stating the problem, formulating the hypothesis, collecting the data by observing and experimenting, interpreting these data, and drawing conclusions (NSRL Rochester, 2015). In the criminal justice field it would generally commence as an inductive process and cases are used to illustrate the application of the scientific method to criminal investigation (Osterburg, 1981). The scientific method can be applied to criminal justice research, and can formulate or construct an accurate representation of the world (Osterburg, 1981). The scientific method is commonly used in criminology and criminal justice. It is applied to gather valuable information, including physical evidence taken at…

Although it mentions many immigrants assimilate to the American way and change their religious believes, many still continue with their religious believes they were taught growing up. Although there are many religions in America and people of certain ethnicities tend to be drawn more towards one religion versus another; Christianity prevails amongst all other religions. It is very influential, including the political force (Kim,2010). I also found it beneficial to follow up the main ideas with discussion questions that prompted my fellow classmates to apply what they had learned, through what I spoke about, because it related the points back to their own experience(s). They were also able to critically think about how they might go about incorporating the talk about race and diversity in their future classrooms. Being able to teach about this topic of race, diversity, and how we can promote acceptance and equality in the classroom, really made me aware of just how sensitive this topic may be for others to swallow. Hearing my classmates’ responses to some of the discussion questions posed by my fellow classmates and I, shed light on the idea that with the right approach there are things that can be done to promote an equal and safe environment for all students and the races that they identity…
