Oliver Chase was a pharmacist who wanted to make his lozenges of medicine taste better and he became famous. His lozenges were small discs that tasted bad so Chase put a hard candy shell on the outside of these discs. One problem was the amount of time it took to make the lozenges, so he made a machine that could roll out and cut out the shape and size of the discs. Then after that he put the hard candy shell on them, people like the taste so he took out the medicine and finally more than just “tooth-busting rock candy, sticks of homemade peppermint, and sticky lemon drops” was available for candy in the United States . Chase’s candy is around today but are known as Necco Wafer.
