The oldest energy source used on Earth ever since our most further-in-time ancestor, the cavemen. The first thing that comes in to mind with biomass is with plants and most people will think that getting energy from plants is burning. Burning is not the only way of extracting energy from these plants. There are not only the method of burning but also others such as the decomposition by bacteria, fermentation and conversion. Fresh plants are used to obtain that energy, but also dead plants, fungus and also garbage can be used. Even though biomass is the oldest form of energy source, it has been used by only ten to fifteen percent of the world in 2014. As stated above biomass has quite an amount of resources, but these resources are often confused with fossil fuels because biomass usually relies on organic matter. According to Dr. Charlotte Williams from Imperial University’s Department of Chemistry, biomass has completely different molecules compared to that of hydrocarbons from oil. Which means that there is a chance to make high values such as plastics to fuels by creating and developing new techniques of extorting energy out of the biomass’ resources, especially plants. Biomass should be used over fossil fuels because it has the one thing that all-renewable sources of energy have, sustainability, something that fossil fuels will never come to possess. Fossil fuel is a finite amount of sources of energy and they tend to run out in the nearby or distant future. Even though it is limited, people use them because of their quick and easy access to energy and about seventy-nine percent of the energy of the United States came from there. There are fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gases etc. Although they have that very quick process of energy production and their recourses also from animals and plants but it is no better than the efficiency and sustainability of biomass, despite having some disadvantages.
