Oldenburg And Van Bruggen Analysis

The massive sculpture by Oldenburg and van Bruggen portrays a massive shuttlecock. The shear size of this can be overwhelming to many people. This sculpture can have a wide variety of emotions of the viewer. When viewing this massive sculpture, it is amazing the amount of detail put into this piece of art. During my initial walk around I felt humbled in a way. It was amazing to see such a magnificent piece of metal work. I felt humbled because, with myself being a metal sculpture I know how much time and attention to detail went into creating such an astounding piece of art. The second thought I had was; how did they create such a big sculpture? It must have been a major hassle trying to get all these pieces lifted and welded into place. It was hard to fathom the shear size of this piece of art. The only time that I would most likely fear this sculpture is if I was next to it during a windy day. The reason behind this is I would be afraid that it could possibly fall and hurt me or someone else. When looking at this sculpture it does tend to make me laugh. One of the reasons would be because of its name. This is such an odd name for an item that is used for a game. Not only that, but how did anyone even decide on that name. The second reason I find this funny is, because we used to play this game with shuttlecocks that were no bigger than one’s hand. Plus, how did the two artists decide on this measly little game piece to create a big oversized sculpture of it. I feel like the odd meaning of the scale could help the artist promote a different style of art.
