Old Yeller Character Analysis

The book Old Yeller by Fred Gipson made in 1956 has a main character named Travis. He is a boy living in the 1860s with a brother, mom, and a dad that is on a trip for a long period of time. The book starts and the dad is going to be going to Kansas for the long journey. So the dad left, and travis had thought about how he would be a man of the house. When his dad left he had met a stray dog that was a dingy yellow. They named him Old Yeller. Travis at first, hated Old yeller. But soon Old yeller turned out to be a true hero. The fourth chapter has the first reason of why Old yeller is a hero. Travis was chopping wood, he had been doing this for a long time and was tired. They got a visit from Bud Searcy. He told them about a bunch of hogs that they had missed. He said “they’re clear back in that cave country, the yonder side of Salt Branch.” So Travis went there and saw a mesquite tree and at the bottom where the hogs and pigs behind them. He changed his mind and decided to go on the dirt bank to do what was better. Then it happened, the dirt bank broke under Travis. He fell and he was now with the killer hogs. His hip was severely injured but Old Yeller saved Travis from being dead. Old Yeller’s injury was worse. He had a slash in his belly and insides were seen. Travis put Old Yeller behind a slab so he could not go when Travis was going home for help. When home Mama said that Travis should stay and leave Old Yeller behind because of his injury. But Travis did not care because he did not want to betray Old Yeller like that. Soi they went with Jumper the mule. Travis put a cow hide and pillows on the mule and went with Ma and Arliss to retrieve the dog. They found Old Yeller and Ma started to stitch his wounds. They told Arliss to go get a lizard for Ma so they could distract him while they were stitching. Then they put Old Yeller on the mule and started to go home. They got home and everything was good at
