Old Town Incident

The quiet streets in Old Town on November 9th of 2016 didn’t last very long. The streets were filled with people scattering as an elephant ran loose. The “Wrongling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus” had lost their entertainment elephant, Fluffy, to the the city. This incident occurred as the circus was on their way to George Mason University for a performance. Fitzwilliam Darcy, a 55 year old man whom is the manager of the circus, stated to us that this is very unusual for the elephant to act out the way he did, “He has never done anything like this before.” King Street was packed, bumper to bumper while Fluffy was on the loose, but as he made his way down the town he paid a visit to the employees at Hard Times Cafe. Attracted by the fresh …show more content…
Yet there did seem to be quite a surprise to fellow pedestrians, “I have never been so scared in my life.” said Gracebelle O’Bequiet who fainted as Fluffy passed by. Alexandria’s local police met up with the circus manager to discuss how they will escort Fluffy back to the circus with no harm. Darcy, not knowing the streets of Old Town, had to fully rely on Sheriff Dana Lawhorne. Fire officials and many police officers gathered to get the elephant’s attention by following the lead of Fluffy’s caretaker, Bobby Joe Cafruni. Cafruni eventually was able to lure the elephant back to the circus train. As a final statement, Sheriff Lawhorne said, “Everyone likes circuses, but the Wrongling Brothers should be more careful.” A concern did arise while looking into the incident. Trainer Cafruni was not found until two hours AFTER Fluffy’s escape. Cafruni seemed disoriented when confronted about the situation as he was then given a sobriety test which score at an .80. Darcy’s reaction to the result of Cafruni not being capable of holding on to responsibilities led to a statement of regret,” That Cafruni always looked shift to me. We never should’ve hired …show more content…
As that was looked into, information about Cafruni’s past popped up which could lead to another charge, an arrest warrant for not paying income taxes in Michigan. Wrongling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus manager Fitzwilliam Darcy said, “We have never had an elephant escape in Alexandria before.” The statement seemed off as the he mentioned only not having an escape in ALEXANDRIA before. Once it was looked into, it was revealed the circus has had four escapes in the last three months. This incident was not ended on a positive note. The escape of Fluffy led Cafruni and Darcy into a heated, there is no justification for what Cafruni did not do, argument. A man at the scene pf the argument overheard Cafruni yelling at Darcy saying, “I quit, THis circus is run by a bunch of clowns.” It does not end there, at the end of the incident Cafruni decided to switch things up a bit and turn the whole incident onto Darcy with a blame of, “Darcy released Fluffy because my sister turned him down for a date.” Now the question is who is the actual one who decided to forget all their responsibilities and throw them out the

Morris outlines that the Brewarrina Riot led to the arrest of 17 Aborigines due to the conflict between a group of Aborigines mourning for the death of Lloyd Boney in a public park, white patrons of an adjacent hotel and the police. Morris recounts that Boney was “found hanged by a football sock in a police cell” (p.18), however whether this was murder or suicide it could not be said. In honour of Boney, a wake was organised in a public park on the 15th of August 1987, however, this wake was met with hostilities from the white patrons in the hotel across the park. The police equipped with riot gears such as batons and shields responded to this affair by “breaking up the wake and driving mourners out of the park” (p.19). The Aborigines confronted the police and white patrons with swearing and throwing of beer bottles while white patrons held guns from the hotel across the park.…

Christopher Mele, an American journalist, wrote an article published by the New York Times, “Ringling Brothers: Barnum and Bailey Circus end its 146-Year Run,” on the culmination of the Ringling Brother’s circus performances. Once activists claimed circus employees maltreated the elephants for entertainment, an uproar of tension erupted, upsetting the ticket sales. These emotions spread throughout the United States. As a result, the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an animal rights organization, campaigned for the elephant’s removal and has triumphed recently Moreover, Christopher Mele mentions that the main reason for the outcry is that the circuses have high operating costs and are unable to fund next year. Overall, the closing circuses have…

In the short story “Circus in Town” the author writes “there was a sudden dilation of life within her, of the world around her - an elephant, a brass band in red coats - and to recapture the moment was all she wanted, to scale the glamour and wonder of it, slowly exquisitely, to feel herself unfurl.” demonstrating how the young girl created her own circus using her imagination instead of sulking about the fact that she can’t go to the real one. The story shows how despite not having money to attend the circus, the girl still created her own happiness and didn’t let that bring down her spirit. The author writes “she had her circus - the splendid, matchless circus of a little girl who had never seen one.” and “All night long she wore her purple tights and went riding Billie round the pasture in them.”…

As not all the boys are contributing to the tasks they believe as uninteresting or pointless due to the lack of excitement and thrill that comes with it, Jack takes the glory upon himself as he kills a pig for the first time and tears away the attention from Ralph’s unexciting flame and dull shelters to the adrenaline rush caused from the amusement of violence, bloodshed, and chaos. Just as important, alliances are formed with good intention to protect all those involved and collectively fight against a common enemy, but this does not work in Ralph’s favour, as his last trusted allies Samneric betray him to Jack in fear and cowardice for their own…

Elephants have similar human emotions and experiences as us, especially when considering their great mental capacity. “When an elephant dies, its family members engage in intense mourning and burial rituals, conducting weeklong vigils over the body” (Siebert 355). Through these actions and rituals, it becomes clear that elephants have the ability to love, care, and grieve for one another. This is extremely similar to how humans perform last rites for one another at their time of death to show their emotions towards another member of their species and society. “Young elephants are raised within an extended, multitiered network of doting female caregivers” (Siebert 355).…
