In today’s day and age, advertisers do not prefer to be direct about what they are trying to sell. Instead, they try to provoke interest in their advertisements by leaving many components of them up for interpretation. Old Spice is a company that is very notorious for this. Their products include body wash, deodorant, and other man fresheners. Many of their advertisements mention “being a man” or “how men are supposed to smell”. When looking at their advertisements I cannot help but wonder what the true definition of being a man is and how this product can affect one’s manhood. This particular Old Spice advertisement stuck out to me because of the odd setting, the man that appears to be covered in soap, and the slogan. While it was obvious to me that …show more content…
The man who is oddly covered in soap draws people into the advertisement. Once people are drawn in, they may notice that the man in the advertisement possesses certain characteristics of masculinity that are recognized by our society. Also, the fact that there is an attractive woman admiring the man while he is in the bathtub may be very appealing to some viewers. The text helps confirm the readers’ conclusions about what the advertisement is trying to portray by suggesting that their product will increase masculinity. The small bottles of Old Spice soap in the advertisement help ensure it is clear that this is the product the advertisement is trying to sell. This particular advertisement is trying to sell soap for men. However, the focus of the advertisement is that the product is quality because it will increase masculinity and female attraction towards users. There are many parts of this advertisement that can be left up for interpretation, but one can conclude what the main focus of the advertisement is. With using pathos in most of the commercial, they also used ethos when the Von Miller was comparing the Old Spice Sport Spray to using a sander like tool in representation of ‘other sport sprays’. In this comparison, the appeal ethos established credibility by people not wanting to have uncomfortable and harsh underarms after using different sport sprays.
