During the 2010 Superbowl, Old Spice aired its first ever commercial, sparking the beginning of a long line of “macho man” commercials to get viewers to buy their product. This first commercial used Isaiah Mustafa, an actor and former NFL player, to represent the “perfect male” in modern society. The company uses his physical attractiveness and showcases the idea of true masculinity: broad shoulders, defined abs, muscles, and a beard. Mustafa easily builds ethos, establishing that he is the embodiment of the “perfect man”. The appeals to men in the commercial are very straight forward because a man wants a woman to think of him as strong, handsome, and rich. So, the commercial really digs into those emotions and gets the audience to associate Old Spice with luxury and power.
