The Old Sheldon Church

The Old Sheldon church is located on Old Sheldon Church Road between Gardens Corner in Yemassee, South Carolina. The Old Sheldon Church is formerly known as Prince William Parish Church (Old Sheldon Church Ruins). Old Sheldon was the state church of South Carolina also known as the church of England. The church was built in Greek revival style between 1745-1753, by William Bull whose Planation border the church grounds (Old Sheldon Church Ruins). The name “Sheldon” came from William Bull, family’s ancestral home in England (Old Sheldon Church Ruins). The church is very historical in South Carolina’s history books and articles. According to sciway.net, the large front doorway had a fanlight above the roof and two rounded windows. On the left side, the church had five bays between the enraged with tall round windows. (Old Sheldon Church) The church was finished by 1753, the church has been built along a set of rows of six tuscans column. Bull served as governor council and lieutenant governor in South Carolina (President and Acting Governor of S.C.). According to Carolana.com, “In 1733 Bull assisted James Oglethorpe in the founding of the new providence of Georgia, mapping out the town of Savannah” (President and Acting Governor of S.C.). William Bull administration within South Carolina had many misfortune events such as Yellow Fever, Smallpox and destroying droughts. However, Bull married and had five children with his wife Mary. Bulls’ second son followed in his footsteps within governmental affairs. Throughout Bulls’ life, he continued being Lieutenant Governor until his death in March 21, 1755.
