The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald maintains the theme of Old Money vs. New Money vs. No Money throughout the whole book very well. It reveals distinct detachments between the characters who live different lives. People are treated differently based on their rank of money and how they accumulated it. Those with Old Money are highly honored. Nevertheless, those who had to procure their own money are still looked up to but are unquestionably beneath those with Old Money. The only obstacle is that he can only reach a particular level of success due to the line dividing the society. This line is described very well by his relationship with Daisy. For when Gatsby was still speaking about his past with Daisy on page 148, it is further declared in Nick’s spirit by saying “In various unrevealed capacities he (Gatsby) had come in contact with such people (Daisy), but always with indiscernible barbed wire between.” (Fitzgerald). The barbed wire is a metaphor for the separate groups. Also, in an exchange between Gatsby and Tom, there are several cases of this. To start with, Tom states “‘I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife.’” (130 Fitzgerald). It is told how Tom feels far more superior than Gatsby. He describes Gatsby, a nobody because of him from nowhere, which is very true in this society view. It is also confirming how Gatsby should not be associated with Daisy because of the different lifestyles. These points are further illustrated by Tom saying “‘and I’ll be damned if I see how you got within a mile of her unless you brought the groceries to the back door.’” (131 Fitzgerald).
