Old Market Woman Vs Caryatid

Decent Essays
Overall I saw a lot of differences and similarities between the Old Market Woman, the Aphrodite of Knidos, and the Caryatid. Each of the different sculptures have their own unique style and appearance, however there are quite a few similarities. All 3 of the sculptures are beautifully crafted and made of similar material. The Old market Woman and the Caryatid have on similar styles of clothing. While the Old Market Woman’s clothing is noticeably more disheveled, the style and fit are almost the same. While all 3 sculptures are of a woman, they each are shown in very different ways; The Caryatid, is shown as well put together and the best of the Greeks, the Old Market Woman shows the exact opposite of that, it shows the poor, old, and weary

The two sculptures, “Venus of Willendorf” and the Minoan snake goddess, are both similar and different in many aspects. They are both showing their breasts, which is considered to be a symbol of fertility. “Venus of Willendorf” is smaller than the Minoan snake goddess by about 10 inches because it was made to carry around, but the snake goddess wasn’t. They’re both seen as fertility figures, but I find that the snake goddess was seen as more powerful and stands tall, while Venus is more feminine and soft. They both begin the start of women depicted in art and fertility figures.…

First, the letters on the sculptures is a very common characteristic between these two artists’ sculptures. Plensa’s sculpture is composed of letters that create the image, which is also a see through sculpture, whereas the letters on Dill’s sculpture are printed on the outer layer of the figure. Another common trait between these two sculptures is the look of their art works. Both Dill and Plensa’s sculptures are in the shape of a human figure. Jaume and Lesley’s sculptures have each been featured outside in parks, which is another similarity that the two share.…

After watching the video, I can tell that the two sculptures have a lot differences, even though they both from Greece. The sculpture on the left named Kouros; was made in the 500s B.C.E. The details on his body are not clear and bold, it is pretty simple. Besides that, his pose is not in a contrapposto way; looks very awkward and uncomfortable. Since all two of his knees are not separate, he stands straight up.…

Two sculptures, simply called “Woman and Man” were created in present-day Romania around 4500 B.C.E. The woman carries most of her weight in her full hips. The man, on the other hand, is widest in his shoulders, then tapers downward from that point. The greatest difference between this set of figures and “Woman from Willendorf” are their treatment as breathing, moving subjects. Instead of standing straight up, the unknown sculptor gave them life by posing the couple.…

disregard of representing different people and cultures to a Western society. Women are sculpted holding flowers and appearing serene and unaffected as women were supposed be. In the sculpture, they are taking care of children which shows the belief that women must be motherly and calm. In the center plaque, perhaps one of the most troubling aspects, is Christopher Columbus. The decision to place him in the center of the sculpture, indicates the importance of his presence and may signify that he is the ideal example of what people should try to be, the opposite of savage as it were.…

The sculptor of Augustus actually took a traditional Roman pose and applied canonical proportions from Greek art which was shown in the sculpture Spear Bearer. Both statues also have the same smooth textured face and rounding of features such as the mouth and eyes. These works of art also share similar facial expressions as a more stoic look even though they are both posed differently. Even though these statues are similar they are also very different because of their historical purpose and cultural themes. The statue of Augustus of Primaporta uses idealism and realism to depict Augustus as a mighty ruler showing him clothed and with Cupid.…
